We had a fantastic stay at this hotel. The staff were very friendly, the rooms were very clean, the free breakfast was great (they even switch out the hot breakfast options each day). There is a very cute women's boutique in the lobby with some fun clothing. The pizza, ice cream, and pie were all great. We prefer firm beds and so found theirs too soft for our taste. The wireless internet service was very shaky and so if you need to work there may work better to use your own hot spot or perhaps using a hard wire cord would have worked better (the hotel has them available, but we didn't use that). We stayed in a suite, which worked great. The kids loved the whirlpool tub (and it was clean enough I would let them use it).

We enjoyed two nights at the Golden Spike in Hill City and found it a wonderful place to mix business and pleasure. Friends from another state, with whom we also have a business relationship, were staying in another suite. Our suite was perfect for the work we needed to complete, and the room was clean, spacious, and comfortable, with all the amenities we needed. Then we were centrally located to show off the Black Hills to our friends with afternoon and evening excursions. We enjoyed the breakfast each morning. The dining area was large, so we had no problem finding an open table, and the selection was more than adequate. We didn't have occasion to try the restaurant in the evenings, but we did enjoy the hand-scooped ice cream cones one evening. Also worth noting are the selection of pies and cheesecakes in the display case and the lovely clothing, purses, and jewelry in the gift shop. We were impressed by the friendly and efficient staff, from the people behind the desk to the breakfast room servers to the housekeeping staff. We didn't use the pool, spa, or room service, so didn't rate those features below. Yes, we would stay there again.

Room Tip: An upper floor might be a little quieter.

Best Western hotels are not as standardized as some of the other chains; each property has its own personality and quirks. This one is pretty good in most ways. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall the property is attractive, clean, and reasonably well maintained for its age (it is not new).

Our room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The room was a bit clammy, but there were thunderstorms every night during our stay and we didn't run the A/C as the temperature was unseasonably cool (we stayed in mid July). Everything in the room worked until the last morning, when a fluorescent light unit went out shortly before we checked out. The fridge made a funny noise but did the job. The sink/mirror was in an alcove in the main room while the tub/shower and toilet were in a separate room, which was very clean.

The lobby and other common areas were also good; no complaints or problems noted. There is a nice outdoor deck at one end of the building, another off the indoor pool, and also a little 'garden' patio - all with tables and chairs. These were good places for our group (a small family reunion of 12) to gather informally. There are no meeting rooms available for rental, but the manager told us we could use the breakfast room in the afternoon/evening if we wanted. We didn't wind up using it because of the other spots that were available. I didn't try the pools but one of our party said that the indoor pool area smelled very strongly of chlorine while the outdoor pool was cold. The lobby has a Seattle's Best coffee bar which also serves beer, wine, and a few light snacks. I found this nice to have available. There is also a shop selling clothing, jewelry, souvenirs, etc. This leaves only a little space for just gathering and sitting.

The hotel's complimentary breakfast is relatively good, with a decent selection of bread/pastries, fruit, yogurt, cereal, a waffle iron, and a hot bar with eggs, meat, biscuits and gravy, etc. The offerings at the hot bar varied slightly daily. All was good except most in our party were unhappy with the eggs, which did not seem to be the real thing. There is also a regular restaurant serving all meals, but hardly anyone seemed to be using it. At 6:00 one evening we noticed it was completely empty. There are plenty of other good places to eat in walking distance in town so this shouldn't be an issue.

Anyone interested in railroads would enjoy the décor, which includes some very nice b&w photos (Kindigs in the main lobby and two O. Winston Links in our room). There are also some interesting state railway maps from the 30's/40's and a collection of assorted memorabilia and artifacts (lanterns, ads, dining car menus, etc.). The "1880 train" to Keystone runs behind the property so expect some loud whistles at various times from mid-morning to late afternoon. Our room was in the back and I did not hear any noise from the main road.

Overall this is a reasonably pleasant place to stay, in an excellent central location for visiting sites throughout the Black Hills. Even though the hotel is out on the edge of town, Hill City is small enough that you can walk to the other end of town in 15-20 minutes. Normally I would say that the rate we paid was a bit high for a property of this quality, but you have to remember that hotel choices are limited in the interior of the Black Hills and many (including I think this one) aren't even open in the winter. So for mid-peak in a highly seasonal prime tourist area, I think the rates are quite fair. I would stay here again.

Quiet, clean, and good free breakfast. Very helpful front desk. Very close to all tourist attractions in the Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands area. Cute gift shop in lobby, includes womens clothing and jewelry. Coffee shop also in lobby.

The outside of the propery is very nice. The room decor is also tastefully done. Check in went okay however, the clerks seemed tired and the " Glad you are here feel" was missing. This was kind of the feel with the majority of the staff tht we encountered. The hotel resturaunt was a huge disappointment. Once again it was a personnel issue that made the experience negative. It took a long time to get service, our food , dessert and the bill, it took almost an hour and a half. The waitress and the host were having difficulty with each other and that transferred to our service. The pools were okay but because of their size they filled up quickly with guests. Basically the property is nice but we were paying top dollar for a room in the area and our expectations of good service from staff was not met. Even at check out with no one behind us the lady rushed us out without asking how our stay was. Will we return? I am not sure, good service to me is important.

Nice hotel, great location with easy access to all black hills destinations. Enjoyed the pools and staff were great-especially David at the front desk. Breakfast was good but very crowded each morning- could use a better layout. Suite was great for a family of 5 however the divider between the two rooms did not provide any sound barrier and if closed at night the pull out couch room was very stuffy and hot. Overall I would definaetly return.

We stayed two nights at this hotel. It was beautiful on the outside but the room wasn't top-notch in the. It was great to have a microwave and fridge included, but the bathroom was slightly small. There is a separate double sink area that is great for getting ready in the morning. Our room was very damp and we left feeling a little soggy. Possibly it was a one-time problem. I would likely stay here again if we return to this area.
