“Great for kids, very close to Rushmore”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012

We stayed one night in our 32 ft RV at the end of the summer and it was considered the best KOA from our kids (boys 9 and 11). The variety of free kids activities was great - inflatable 'bouncy houses', pool, mini waterslide, mini golf, bounce pillow, playground, etc - plus the facilities such as the pizza and restaurant made it a nice stop quite near all the rest of the attractions in the South Dakota area such as the Rushmore Adventure Cave, Mt. Rushmore itself, Crazy Horse Monument, and on the road to Rapid City you'll find a variety of other family entertainment such as Bear Country. There is a beautiful little lake for a picnic just a few miles east of the KOA on the way towards the Mt. Rushmore monument that made a great lunch time stop as well. If you have kids, it is a great location and we would definitely stay there again.
There are cabins for rent as well as many RV sites with plenty of room for pull throughs and our slide outs.

We stayed in a two room cabin too close to the RV dump! It was stinky by the RV dump! Besides that, the cabins are nice. Wish our cabin would have been somewhere else. It did not have any water and we knew that ahead of time. We did not spend much time there. The rooms were very clean. It came with a picnic table, fire place (but we did not get to use it). It has a swing on the front porch. It has 2 bunk bed so you can fit 4 children in the front room. It has a double size bed in the back room with a mirror and two windows each room. The camp ground was fun because it had a lot of stuff - Jumping pillow, mini golf, water slide, 2 pools, horse back riding, places to hike, excellent views, good pancakes. The bathroom facilities - hmmm - two were updated, one was not. Unfortunely, we were closest to the least modern. It was cold at night. In the least modern, the showers were not real clean. In the modern showers, They were clean and big and more private!

Room Tip: If you are getting a cabin, try to request near the bigger bathroom facilities, or near the pool.

We tent camped with three kids under the age of 7 for for three nights at the Mt Rushmore KOA and had a great experience. This is not a back country camping experience, it's a busy campground with lots of activities and amenities and geared towards families.

We stayed at site 300 non electric, it was large enough for two tents. when we signed in I asked for a site that would fit two tents, near the bathrooms and not near water and she assigned us a nice site, also said we were welcome to drive around and pick our own site if we didn't like the assigned one.

Kids loved all the activities, they were not bored. We all enjoyed the local Native American presentation and local band.

Ordered pizza from the ice cream shop, it was not great, but saved us a trip into town.

Bathrooms were clean for a campground, warm showers.

We didn't have any complaints, especially for a little over $30 a night for the non electric sites.

One of the best KOAs we stayed at. Wonderful amenities. Great location to Crazy Horse/Rushmore. We took a shuttle to Rushmore for the lighting ceremony in the evening for $6/person, which was really nice. We camped and the sites were a little too close together. We had a family next to us and we heard the parents yelling at the kids to sleep clear as day for a while, which was quite annoying. We were wishing we would've spent a little more on a cabin at that time. Lots of people all around and we like a little more secluded camping, so be aware that you won't get that here, if that is what you like. Lots of showers in our area and bathrooms. Shower water wasn't very hot, bad pressure and a little too dirty for me. Overall though, a nice campground, especially for families.

Let me start by saying that we have stayed at this KOA several times over the years. It has always been a blast, and offers a ton of things to do. You can go horseback riding, rent ATV's, play mini golf, volleyball, use the bouncy pillow, splash park and waterslide. You can also attend movie night, live music, take a bus to the lighting ceremonies at Rushmore, eat at the on-site restaurant or order a pizza to take back to your campsite. The pancake breakfast in the morning is also quite nice and affordable. The staff was mostly friendly, except for a few people but that might be expected with such a large operation. The view of the Black Hills from the sites are amazing.

What concerns me the most is how this campground is going down hill maintenance wise. The showers and bathrooms are in need of a major overhaul. There are simply not enough facilities to accomodate the amount of campers that they pack into this location, and it looks like they are expanded out to the rear of this park which will onl make things worse. The bathrooms smelled like an outhouse, the shower stalls were moldy and smaller musty with the tile and trim falling off from the walls. There were ver long lines to use the bathrooms...I watched a young boy almost have an accident because there were no facilities available for him to use.
I would recommend staying here, but it is quite pricey for the area and it does not look like they are putting any of the money back into the park for maintenance. Please do not let the park fall apart as this is a great location for families wanting to spend a few days in the Black Hills .

We camp every summer and generally prefer rustic state campgrounds. However, after spending several days traveling from the east coast I thought this would be a nice treat for the kids to be able to play in the pool and water slide. After one trip down the water slide we heard thunder and (as it should be) all the pools and water amenities were closed down. We retreated to our camper and sat out a terrible thunderstorm. The storm washed out the road to the restroom behind us.

Stuff happens. Mother nature sends thunderstorms and that is not the campgrounds fault. But that was a very expensive trip down the waterslide. Other than that the sites are too close together. There isn't enough bathroom facilites... lines in the bathroom both in the evening and in the morning. Bathroom was dirty and there was only a trickle of water in the shower.

I will never stay here again. Not worth the money. The pools might be nice if you get to use them, but basics like personal space, a sink to brush your teeth in without waiting 20 min and water pressure for a shower aren't to be found.

This campground is a great place for anyone who just wants to stay at the campground and take part in all of the things to do there. Kids love it. Swim in one of the two pools and a splash pad playground for the little ones, water slide, panning for gold ( AKA rocks), bounce pads, mini golf, reclining bikes ( those are a huge hit for the kids), nightly entertainment, ice cream, wine, & fudge shops. The food was good at the resturant, many people took part in the pancake feed each morning. Restrooms were clean, hot showers, level camping pads. All in all it was a nice time and will go back.Forgot to mention the horse riding, and ATVS.Traveled there during bike week and met lots of nice folks. It is a bit far from Sturgis, but if you don't mind the ride its a quiet campground and worth the ride. Riding in the Black Hills is awesome on a motorcyle.
