“Use to be a great KOA”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

My family and I have been coming here every year for the past six years. Always just befor bike week, to avoid some of the crowds.

Without a doubt this is the least friendliest staff they have gotten for a summer crew.

(Pauline from Arizona) if you "do not like the long hours". You may wish to consider a different job.

Trash throughout the KOA camp, weeds in flower beds, hot tube a lovely shade of lime green. These are a few of the issues that NEVER use to exist here and frankly could easily be fixed.

I have no idea what the general manager is doing, but it is not keeping an eye on the camp.

Next year we will stay at a different RV resort

pros: Location -proximity to Mount Rushmore

cons: Dirty bathrooms - graffiti in shower house
no designated tent camping - just plopped in the middle of 2 RVs.

Instead of staying close to Mt. Rushmore I would travel to our families next day attraction and stay near there.

This was a huge RV park, spread out across a large area. The park had lots of facilities/activities for families and also had a restaurant and a takeout pizza bar. We didn’t try the restaurant, but we can recommend the pizza bar. The park is in an excellent location for Hill City, Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park and there are lots of activities in the vicinity. The park was well maintained and the staff were friendly. There were separate toilets for men and women and the showers were unisex, accommodated in the same block as the toilets. We stayed in RV site 567 and found the wireless signal to be intermittent.

This is an awesome KOA for families with kids. Tons of fun activities for kids, including lots of water fun. Obviously its a fairly busy campground and if your looking for quiet nature, this might not be for you. Our campsite (#513) was well shaded and fairly quiet. The pancake tent is fun (have your kids catch their pancakes from the cook!). My grand daughter absolutely loved the horseback ride. The only downside was the fire ban, but that was obviously out of the control of KOA.

We stayed at the Mt. Rushmore KOA last week and had a wonderful experience. It was recommended by a friend of ours and we were not disappointed. The campground was very clean and well taken care of. I would highly recommend renting an ATV and going back up in the hills. You can rent them for a half day and you will not be disappointed. The views were amazing and the trails were almost empty! I would definitely come back! It is located right in the middle of all the Black HIlls has to offer!

Don't get me wrong, I love kids and have had 6 of my own. But the only thing that makes this park appealing is the huge variety of activities geared towards youngsters. The hot tubs and pools are basically a huge splashing ground. Aside from that, a lot of the sites are not level, the bathrooms were not well-kept and the shower stalls were tiny. Over 500 sites, so there is nothing personal about the experience, but the staff were nice. The prices were outrageous, up to $80 per night with a mandatory $6 resort fee! There are a lot of other campgrounds in the area - so if you are not looking for kiddie entertainment, try one of them. OR... try the KOA at Hot Springs, SD, just a short drive to the south.

We stayed for 7 nights with a 5 year old in a pop up trailer and had a great time.
Sites: I did quite a bit of research before selecting a campground. We wanted one with activities for our daughter and shade. Looking at google maps you'll see there are very few shaded sites for RV/trailers (not tents) and we found that to be true. Almost 99% of their sites are in full sun so as other recommend, drive around to find one you like. The sites turn over very fast and there's a LOT of them so you'll likely find one that will work for you. I requested site 534 as it appeared to be shaded (and paid the $10 extra to reserve a specific site since we were staying awhile). It was on a little hill so not down by the majority of sites, had nice privacy, and close to everything. A little hard to back the trailer into but once set, was a great site for the week. Doubtful anything larger than a 8 or 10' trailer would fit though. The sites for RVs are easy to get into and everyone we saw checking in had an "ambassador" leading them to their site. They also would help you get a different site if you didn't like yours. The bathrooms were fairly clean. there are multiple "comfort stations" and ours was #4. For the most part it was fairly clean considering all the people using it. Would give 4/5 stars on the restrooms which is pretty good considering they have 700 sites! We did check out some of the others and they are definitely newer and kept up a bit better. Showers were larger as well.
Activities: Wow do they have a lot going on. The waterslide is great for kids - perfect size and water at the bottom is only a couple feet deep. Doesn't go to fast either, especially if they are riding alone. Splash pad is pretty neat as well but very cold water. Playground is large and clean area. Heated pool wasn't too warm but was clean and nice to relax in. there are two pools - one by the kid area and one by the horse barn, both heated. There was live music a couple nights, skit show, karoke night, etc...always something going on. We typically did something around the area during the day and then hung out at camp at night.
Location: Perfect. Couldn't ask for a better location in regards to all the different touristy things to do. 5-20 min or less to almost everything you'd want to do.
So why not 5 stars? While at night things quiet down very quickly around 9:30/10pm, during the day it was very loud. The KOA allows ATVs and there was a few days where kids were riding them around ridiculously fast and loudly. There was also a group camp location and for a couple days there was a church school camping there so we had to listen to the loud preacher do 3 lectures a day to the kids. Would be nice if he wasn't doing it right next to all the sites given there's tons of open space they could have used. Not against religion, just having to listen to someone preach about anything 3 hours in a day. Again neither of these is really the KOA's fault, just our experience there.
Would definitely stay again as it was nice to have everything available if needed.

Room Tip: Site 534 is one of the few shaded but only meant for smaller travel trailers. Tent sites up by this...
