“Rental 4-wheelers to pricey”
Reviewed July 24, 2011

stayed at the Palmer Gulch KOA for three nights. The showers and restrooms were clean. Alot of the guests kept walking through our site to get to the restrooms. I think management knew this would happen at our site. We were advised by KOA staff that there were 60-70 miles of forest that we could see if we rented the Polaris for $190/4-hours. We rented the vehicle and there were only about 20 miles of trails that you could go on. Some trails were steep and rocky and not able to traverse. If you go do not rent the Polaris vehicles not worh the price.

We are still at the campground and customer service in NONE. Booked our site with two other familys ( Traveled more than 1000 miles) so we could be next to eachother. Checked in they had us allover the place not what we booked. So after getting checked in for more than an hour got us next to eachother. When we pulled into our spot there we about 10 fourwheelers there. To top it off they we washing them so spot was vary muddy not where i was going to pull my camper into. went up to the front desk to ask to move to a different spot and they said to bad we allready moved you once. We ended up just moving to a spot about 3 over. They can deal with the next person who's spot we ended up taking.

We have camped at numerous campgrounds (mainly in the midwest), but decided on a family trip out west to see the sights of Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, etc... I was delighted in the excellent location of this particular KOA. It is situated right in the Black Hills. All of the major attractions are within a close driving distance. After checking in, a nice gentleman led us to our campsite, which was right next to the pancake tent. My sons (ages 9 and 11) were thrilled with all of the neat activities they had for kids. They spent hours on the jumping pillow. They also enjoyed the water slide and pools. They rented the fun cycles on the last day, and they loved those. All of the staff that we encountered were exceptionally friendly. The ladies in the stores were very nice and helpful. The shower houses were super clean. Staff members were constantly visible throughout the day, picking up trash or maintaining the park. This campground has everything! I can't think of anything that would make this campground any better than it is! If we ever go back to South Dakota, I will definitely stay here again.

Stayed with a Girl Scout troop in the kamper kabins. Was chilly at night so comfortable without airconditioning. Bathrooms clean although one kept clogging while we were there. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Good ice cream. Except for the kids on the pedal bikes, we did not see any unruly kids, but we did not go in the pool. Although we did not try it, there was a cute little restaurant on the side of the hill that looked interesting. You could stay in the Black Hills for a week and not have to leave the campground for fun. Lots of free--although there is a resort fee of $6/cabin/night. Some of activities did cost, like the pedal bikes and horseback riding, but were reasonable. The Palmer Gulch Lodge Cabins overlooked the KOA and looked great. May stay there the next time, but either way, looked like the best place to stay in the Black Hills!

We only spent a night there because of the short drive to Mt Rushmore. My husband & son enjoyed the pancake breakfast. Thought it was a little expensive since we didn't use any of the water "toys" due to our short stay. We are going to plan a week in the area in a year or 2 so will keep this KOA in mind.

We camped here with friends. In our group, we had two rv's and a tent. Everything was run so smoothly. The kids had plenty of activities and the staff was tremendous.

We just returned from 4 nights in a 2 bedroom kitchenette cabin. The grounds are beautiful and IF the weather would've been nice there would have been quite a bit to do however it was very cold and rainy for most of our trip. Before booking I called to make sure the cabins were "modern" because we didn't want a camping trip. After being assured they were and figuring at $200 a night it would be - we arrived. Well - it wasn't quite what I was told on the phone. There were gaps under the doors that critters came through, gaps in the windows that air blew through and most importantly - NO HEAT. It was FREEZING and our small children were SO cold. To top it off to use the very tiny wood stove to heat the $200/nt cabin you had to BUY firewood from them for $5.49 for a few very small pieces. We complained and they brought us one bag of firewood that lasted for 1/2 a night. It was dirty, the bathroom was disgusting - wouldn't even let my kids take a bath in the tub. If it would've been less than 1/2 the price I would rate it much better. I've stayed in nice hotels for $200 night and this was NOT worth the money. I would STRONGLY suggest looking elsewhere if you want a nice cabin for your vacation. Also, the WIFI never worked in our unit.
