“Very cute, great view”
Reviewed November 6, 2007

The cabin that we got appeared to be brand new . It was cute, neat, clean and cozy. The only odd thing about it was that the walls did not go all the way up to the ceilings and so you could hear noise/ see light from the other room ( as there were two bedrooms ) . The grounds are unattractive but the view is very nice.

  • Liked — The view, very cute cabin
  • Disliked — Not much...the grounds were pretty unattractive

We visited the Black Hills two years ago and just had to come back for more. Pine Rest Cabins was the first place on our list for accommodations and we were relieved to find they had a spot for us on short notice. It's even better than we remembered and we just love Hill City. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the Black Hills and hope to come again in a couple of years. The cabins are so comfortable and convenient to all the places we wanted to visit. The Needles Highway is one of the most spectacular scenic drives you can imagine, and only a few miles from the cabins. We went as far as Devils Tower and still got home in time to sit in the hot tub and relax in front of the fireplace. Fall is a special time here - we highly recommend a visit.

  • Liked — Comfortable cabin with a kitchenette. Very comfortable bed. Easy access to attractions.

We stayed at Pine Rest for 4 nights and it was great. Jan was so helpful on suggesting hiking trails in the area. The cabin is located less than a mile from Hill City on the highway. After hiking all day the hot tub felt great. We will definitely stay there again.

Very nice clean cabins at a reasonable rate for the area. Did a lot of shopping around before we booked - Jan was most helpful on the phone . This was a great location for all of the things we wanted to do and a good place to unwind at the end of the day. Steve gave us some great tips for sightseeing & hiking in the area besides the obvious Mt. Rushmore. We can hardly wait to come back.

We came out to hunt tukeys and now we want to come back to visit all the great attractions. The cabins were right in the middle of everything. We took a quick trip to Mt. Rushmore just 15 minutes away but there is so much more to see and do in the area. We were dissapointed that it took us until the last day to get our turkeys, were hoping to have more time to tour around. The hunting was fantastic - a whole other review. The cabin was great to come home to every night - very comfortable beds, clean well equipped cabins - even cable TV and Wi-Fi. Jan and Steve were very friendly and helped point us in the right direction. It was nice to be able to grill out every night and have room for our gear on the front porch. We thoroughly enjoyed the wooded surroundings and the bathhouse tucked up in the mountain with the hot tub and sauna. We'll be back later this summer with the whole family.

  • Liked — Location, comfortable beds, friendly down to earth atmosphere.
  • Disliked — Cable TV was in the bedroom .

We booked this place for 6 nights through email and their website. Based on our requirements, they offered 3 different cabin options. We liked the fact that they had a hot tub and sauna. Unfortunately I neglected to thoroughly read the website and ended up in the cabin they allow pets in (my fault - and I have pet allergies which flared up during the stay).

We were pretty disappointed in the cabin to start with. Two rooms: A kitchen with an old dinette set and a Futon so you could watch the small TV, which was perched on top of the refrigerator. The other room was a cramped bedroom with two queen beds. There were very few places to plug anything in, so we ended up unplugging lamps to recharge cell phones, camera batteries, etc. It had a nice front porch, but we were about 50 ft from a very busy highway on a hill, so there was a constant barrage of noise from cars, logging trucks, motorcycles, etc. Not a very restful atmosphere. The bathroom had an improvised shower, and for some reason there was a strong odor of sewer gas in the bathroom that started on the second day we were there and got progressively worse. It might have been covered up on the first day by a very strong smell of bacon (not ours). The first time we went up to use the hot tub we didn't get in it because of the lovely ring of scum around the top.

As luck would have it we had to leave after three nights, and we were told by the management that they could give us a refund for the remainder of our paid stay if they were able to rebook it. They weren't able to do that so they offered a gift certificate, which I ended up accepting. It was written for the outstanding dollar amount good for one year, but could only be used for winter or fall lodging, effectively making it useless to us.

My advice would be to stay somewhere else. This wasn't a nice experience for us.

Went by their internet site and brochure and made a reservation thinking we were getting a peaceful getaway cabin in the Black Hills - unfortunately, we didn't know the cabins were located DIRECTLY on a major highway with the traffic noise vibrating thru the cabin - you can hear every semi truck, car and motorcycle that goes by.. The cabins are not air conditioned, so when the windows are us, the noise is even worse. The pictures on their site and brochure make them look secluded and the brochure says located just off hwy 16/385 - 50' off the highway!
The traffic is better at night, but don't even think about trying to take an afternoon nap.
The cabins are clean and it is nice to have the kitchen, etc., but the highway noise is horrible.

We've lived here on the road to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park for over 15 years and we love it here! Our apologies about the traffic. Summer is a busy time, and I am really sorry we mismatched you - had I known you wanted a secluded cabin I would most certainly have referred you elsewhere. It is not to our advantage to mislead anyone. Living here on the premesis and raising our kids here, we really prefer to have happy customers, and fortunately we have many. Pine Rest Cabins has been here since 1911, one of the first tourist cabin courts in the Black Hills upon the advent of the auto-mobile. With it's perfect location in the center of the Black Hills National Forest we are confident that it will remaining our home and livlihood a good long time, and a home away from home for many more guests to come. Thank you for mentioning how clean it was and once again, we are sorry that you didn't find your lodging match, we hope that you will visit the Black Hills again.
Sincere Regards, Pine Rest Cabins owners.
