“Gorgeous property, outdoor fun indoor comfort”
Reviewed June 26, 2011

This is a lovely piece of property just 4 miles off the main drag in Hill City (with its sizeable grocery store and a few restaurants and shops) yet very pretty and quiet. We stayed 3 nights in one of the log homes (McDonald) along a rushing slate-bottom creek in a lush pasture surrounded by hills. The horses come down every evening and graze right in your back yard. Go to sleep to the creek, wake to the birds singing. The kids spent hours splashing around the creek (one of their favorite parts of the whole trip) and we had marshmallows in our creekside fire pit every night with a million stars. The 4 bedroom house was very comfortable for our family of 7 with a good sized yard and privacy. The ranch offers a 99 cent pancake breakfast which was convenient (it's about a buck extra for drinks or sausage, still a good deal). Breakfast is limited to 8 to 9 am though so you will have to get up to take advantage of that. It was cold so we didn't use the outdoor pool but it looked nice and they have horseback riding also. Buy wood and matches at the grocery store in town. Be prepared to unplug a little, we only got one TV station (they do have free tapes and DVDs) and couldn't get cell coverage or 3G at the ranch though we could down in town. They have wireless in the main building but we did not go use it. Hill City is very convenient and central for the sights in the Black Hills and this is a really lovely property. We would definitely stay at the Ranch again!

We stayed with 11 of us in the McCaskell cabin. Very comfortable! We had agreat time, the staff was friendly, the trail ride was awesome! If you are used to 5 stars with someone available for your every need, this may not be the place for you. They are available if you need anything, just not in your space constantly. We loved it, I recommend the breakast, great family place.

My husband and I stayed in the Angostura camping cabin with his Dad, Step-mom and her 3 kids and one of their friends. It had 2 queen beds with a twin bunked on top of both of them. We were pretty cozy but it worked out well for us. They had sheets, blankets and pillows for us to use for a minimal fee. The cabin was nice and had pretty much had what you would need for camping (and then some depending on your definition of camping). There was a small fridge, microwave, coffee pot, kitchen sink, toilet, shower, and a small TV/VCR. There was a fire pit located near the cabin and the pool was close as well. It was a little too cold for a swim on our visit but they did have it up and running. It actually snowed a little one morning and it was at the end of May.
They offered a breakfast in the morning that was really delicious. They offered most items for 99 cents each. All you can eat pancakes, sausage, eggs, and coffee.
Trail rides were available as well even though we didn't partake.
Their location is great because it's less than 30 minutes away from most things.
There wasn't much cell phone reception in the area but we were able to get internet access in certain spots.
We had a great experience and appreciated the value here and are very likely to return.

We originally rented a one room cabin but when the hot water in the tub wouldn't work the owner "upgraded" us to the ranch house at no extra charge. The ranch house is a five bedroom, three bathroom beauty. It even has a Jacuzzi. This was beyond the call of duty for the management since there were two other vacant cabins like the one we rented they could have moved us into. The place was spotless and the view was amazing. It was very quiet and relaxing. We highly recommend the High Country Guest Ranch. For three days I felt like J.R. Ewing!

We had a great Christmas, our kids from Rochester, MN, Pierre, SD, Hill City and we are from Rapid City gathered at High Country Ranch for 4 days and had a blast! The cabin was large enough so we all had space, games were awesome, the theater room was great. Loved the WII bowling tournaments! If we needed something we got immediate attention from the staff. The location is great, only 5 miles to town. We highly recommend this vacation spot. Larry, Bonnie, family and staff are wonderful. Happy New Year to all.

Wow! What a wonderful vacation. We rented Trailside, slept with the windows open, listened to the creek and at breakfast at our picnic table while the horses were rounded up right past us. The folks working there were very hospitable and the cabin was wonderful. We hated to leave. We actually rearranged out travel itinerary to fit in a night of frisbee in our yard, hot dogs and marshmallows over our camp fire and the when it got chilly, we moved inside to watch one of the borrowed movies. Our girls loved the horses and the fact that they could walk up to the store by themselves and buy breakfast ("Cowboy Pancakes are better than your's mom!" to quote them!)

We loved our experience on the High Country Ranch

High Country Ranch was a superb vacation experience. My teenage daughter and I stayed in the Lincoln cabin for a week. It was very comfortable and clean. It was very quiet every night. The cabin had a microwave and a small refridgerator which was great for breakfast and lunch supplies. We only had 3 TV channels but with all we did in the area we were too tired to watch TV anyways. The office had a large selection of VHS for our use.

The ranch was in a beautiful setting off the highway only 4 miles outside of Hill City. Nice proximity to Rapid City, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park and Jewel Cave. Even though we didn't have a chance to use most of the amenities while we were there because I caught a cold prior to our trip, it was nice to have the options. My daughter loved seeing the horses every morning. We did take the 3 hour trail ride to the gold mine. It was beautiful!!! One of the best trail rides we have been on. We did the Cowboy Dinner. It was probably the best meal we had in the area. Even though it wasn't our genre of music, we did enjoy the show. The nightly evening outdoor movie was great. The staff even brought out popcorn. The staff was always helpful. They even let me make a long distance call on their land line to an attraction since cell phone service was non-existent except when we were in town. There was WIFI available to have some connection to the outside world if you really want it.

Overall an excellent vacation experience.
