“Never Again”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2008

We come to Hill City a lot. The other cafes were busy so we thought we would try this. Were out of what we came for. What we did order was very expensive. Spent more for three lunches than we did a the steakhouse for dinner. At least we gave them a chance.

“DO NOT EAT HERE!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2008

We had a just awful meal here! The waitress had the personality of a rock and we waited forever for her to even take a drink order. She actually waited on others first who came in after us.
The milkshakes are $4.99 for a small cup, like a small size cup from a fast food restaurant.
The food was just horrible! The meat was pure fat, it was luke warm, and it tasted like fat. I sent it back and the manager who appeared to be about 17 year old wanted to bring me a fresh one. I said I would not consider eating it because it tasted horrible and asked for a menu. I ordered a BLT thinking they couldn't screw that up. It was OK, but fatty, low quality bacon.
There was no attempt to compensate us as a better establishment would have discounted the meal. As we waited to pay, I observed the "manager" dipping up ice cream for a shake. She dropped the ice cream on the counter in 3 lumps. After scooping from the bucket, she took the scoop and slid it around all over the counter to pick up the 3 dropped lumps as well as the melted puddle and then she put it in the cup! My immediate reaction was Oh No She Did Not! I wish I had seen that on the way in so we could have left before eating.
I would not recommend this place to anyone under any circumstances ever.

“Frozen Food - Yuk!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2007

We were on a trip through Hill City, SD on a Sunday in July when our hotel suggested the "Route 16 Diner" for a family dinner. We had been driving all day to see Mt. Rushmore and were ready for a good meal. Unfortunately, that's not what we got here. At 5:30pm they had already run out of pizzas. That seems to be the house specialty, but we'll never know as we were forced to reorder once our waitress came back to tell us that another waitress had taken the last pizza. (I use the term "waitress" loosely here as they are nothing more than 15 and 16 year old girls, obviously on their first job.)

Our new dinner consisted of a hamburger, a chicken finger sandwich and a PB&J sandwich. The hamburger was a perfect patty with perfect lines on it and perfectly dry. The chicken sandwiches were frozen chicken pieces, like the kind you buy at Costco, on a roll and the PB&J was a dried out Smuckers Crustable® . The food was obviously all frozen and just heated and served. We'd have done better to go to the local market and make our own sandwiches. At least the food would have been fresh.

We were in the midst of a two week trip cross country and this was by far the worst meal we had. To be served frozen food at restaurant prices, by young girls, who would really rather be somewhere else, was a huge downer to the Black Hill experience.

“No home cooked meals here!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2007

If you are looking for a home cooked meal keep driving. There is no cooking at all here, just thawing. We ordered four different items and we all received warmed-up pre-processed meals. The generic no-name ketchup was so awful that it ruined the french fries of one in our party. This place was the biggest disappointment in an otherwise terrific city. Eat anywhere else!
