Wish the advertising was better because we have been to the blackhills a number of times and were yet to stop at the museum! The museum's contents could take up five rooms but the space is so small everything is packed into one! It was almost overwhelming to take everything in but what a fantastic place! There is something for everyone. The museum can easily be seen in less than an hour and conveniently located downtown.

Huge dinosaur skeletons are crowded together in one room of this small but vital museum. They have the 2nd largest t-rex in existence ("Stan"), and the most complete. Ammonites from the inland seas abound, plus minerals and rocks. The huge sea turtle fossil is terrific, as is the rest of the collection. Apparently they do casts that they sell to other museums, so we may have seen "Stan" facsimilies nearer home and not known they originated here.

Our family really enjoyed the museum. It was fantastic to view real dinosaur bones including a T-rex. There were more real fossils to see than in most other larger museums we have been to. They had excellent displays. We even enjoyed their rock collections. Staff was friendly and helpful. The gift shop was excellent... there were very unique items for any budget to purchase. We found many neat items for less than $3. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Situated in center of Hill City's touristy (but fun shopping, dining) area, wasn't sure about the "institute" but it turns out to be an extraordinary collection, though small. Astounding collection of amonites, crinoids, dinosaur bones, gorgeous and well-labelled rock and mineral collection. Really excellent gift shop with thoughtful collection, not usual tourist stuff, and a nice section for kids. Free coffee was a nice touch! One of the highlights of our trip.
