We really enjoyed our stay at this campground. We are not campground fans, but this one was great because it was off the main roads, quiet, and the cabin we stayed in was perfect. It was cheap because it was off season--quite a deal. The owners were very friendly and nice. They mailed us back our cell phone charger that we left in the cabin. They also gave us great tips on what to see in the area. Custer State park is very close and it was the favorite place for the whole family. We saw a ton of wildlife. The campground is close to everything. We would definitely stay again---in the off season. It was not crowded at all!

Awesome for kids I have a 5 and 4 yr old boys. They had a nice pool and playground. Cabins weren't that great though was on a hill so sitting around fire was a little difficult but it was nicely shaded. Full service spots were good but packed in like rv camping. Was a nice campground. Like rocky mountain house camping except no mountains.

I have stayed in the Black Hills nearly 30 times in the past 16 years. I have stayed in nice hotels and campgrounds, and this place is one of the nicest overall campgrounds that I have stayed at. It is located halfway between Hill City (10 mn away) and Sylvan Lake (10 mn away). The town of Custer is about 20 mn away, as is Keystone and Mount Rushmore. The tent site here are great, but if you are looking for very secluded and remote tent sites that are a slice of heaven, check out Custer Mountain Campground and choose a site in the remote upper hill area.

Horse Thief is great because of the view, the variety of sites and the amenities. This place has it all: a general store, laundromat, heated outdoor pool, playground and clean bath house. It seems like the campground would have the potential to be a crazy zoo, but it's not...it's quiet and peaceful.

We stayed in one of the two-room sleeping cabins (little log cabin). It has bunks that can accomodate eight people, heat, A/C and a fridge. Topping it off was a front porch with a swing that came with a beautiful view of the rocky pine covered hills. The price was very reasonable and the staff was helpful.

This veteran Black Hills camper recommends Horse Thief Campground!!

We had four units and the staff who were very friendly ( especially Kim) made sure we were all situated together. The washrooms were always kept very clean and the store was full of everything that you had forgotten. The pool may have been heated but with the temperature in the 90 to 106deg range it felt cool but lets not complain about that. The location is perfect for the days out sight seeing being close to most tourist sites and only 3 miles from Hill City for groceries. It was a three day drive from Canada but well worth it.

We just got back from the Blackhills and really enjoyed our stay at the Horse Thief Campground on Hwy 87 (There's also a Horse Thief LAKE campground, so don't be confused!) We chose it because Custer resorts/campgrounds were full and this was the closest campground to Lake Sylvan. We were not disappointed! We stayed in one of their camper cabins. Very nice. Ours had two rooms, A/C and heat (you'll need heat before A/C in the blackhills--it gets chilly up there at night!) and even a fridge. The setting is just beautiful--forests, hills and rocks. They have a heated pool and small playground for the kids. The familly who runs the place is extremely nice. My only complaint was the long walk to the very clean bathhouse, but at least they had porta potties close by for late night emergencies. We would definitely stay there again.

We just stayed there for 2 nights in July and the place was very quiet. Although fairly full, the sites are very spacious. They have everything from RV sites with full hookups to secluded tent sites. They offer full bathroom/shower facilities, laundry, and pool. The general store onsite had everything you would need that you forgot at home or ran out of.

After a rain, we saw the most beautiful double rainbow over the campground! We loved the location. Central to both Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse and not right on the highway. Would highly recommend to anyone that likes a little quite time while camping but still like to have the amenities.

It was about 4 or 5 years ago we stayed there as tent campers. In spite of the fact that it rained the whole 5 days we stayed we had a ball in South Dakota. And I mean torrential rain - real gully washers. We had to dry our sleeping bags in the dryers at the campground daily. But the surroundings are breathtaking & if you like to hike there is a ghost town up the hill from the tent camping area. There are so many things to see in this area the 1880' train ride is awesome, the restaurants in town are very good & generous portions too. I think the tyrransauras rex bones were great to see in the museum, of course Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse are nearby. And the campground had a cement pool which I remember floating on my back with nothing but sky above me & pine tree covered hills surrounding me. Even without sunshine I would do it all over again. Also a nice general store at the campground & shower house & washers & dryers. Be sure to buy one of the Indian pipes (a kind of round flat flute of sorts) from the onsite general store.
