A Very quiet and relaxing stay, well kept up, showers, rest room and pools were very clean. Location was great, just a stone throw away from the best riding, owners were very nice and personal. Plan to stay here again next year.........

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. They were accommodating with our late check-in, and they were so friendly. They offered suggestions and helped us jump start our car when the battery died. We didn't have to drive far to reach Mt. Rushmore or Crazy Horse, and that was a big factor in choosing this campground. Only 1 bathhouse and laundry area, but the perks more than made up for that. Our tent site was spacious, and we weren't bothered by any other campers at all during the night.

We really liked that this campground was secluded from highway noise and very spacious, extremely clean campsites. The sites were a little close together, in that you could hear the campers at the next site as though they were right next to you.

There is only one bathhouse with plumbing in the campground, there are several port-a-potties peppered around the grounds for convenience, since the bathhouse (which included showers) was kind of out of the way of most tent sites.
RVers will probably find the bathhouse closer than tenters,

The pool is fine, there is a dishwashing sink and the general store is beautiful.
Quiet time is 10pm-7am, so early risers should take note of that.
The campsites were grassy, amazingly well-maintained and very pretty.
Mount Rushmore is about 20 minutes away, Crazy Horse monument is the same- or less- and everything is very easy to find.

Room Tip: The cabins on the property looked really nice, maintained well, and definitely worth a try.

We stayed here for a week and loved it. Our tent site was incredibly quiet and peaceful, and the whole campground was quiet by night fall. The bathhouse is small, but very clean. Each tent site has a fire ring for camp fires, but the picnic shelters only have gas grills and you need to bring your own propane if you want to use them. We would have loved at least one charcoal grill instead of having to cook over our campfire every night. The campground is well-situated in the middle of the hills, and is conveniently close to Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Hill City, the Mikkelsen Trail, and Harney Peak. Finally, a super helpful staff! I highly recommend this campground.

We traveled with our Boy Scout Troop to the Black Hills last month. Our original campground had a large area that had been clear cut by a logging company and was left in disarray. It was even very difficult to maneuver our travel trailer to even get turned around. The owners of Horse Thief Campground went out of their way to accommodate not only the Troop in a tent grouping, but also our family's travel trailer. The full hook-ups were very convenient, making it such we did not have to maneuver around a dump station when we pulled out. Horse Thief had clean hot shower and bathroom facilities. We were in a convenient location to the area's main attractions, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, as well as the grocery store in Hill City. The owners were also very knowledgeable about the area and length of time it would take to get around, which helped the Troop plan for the next day's trip.

Found the family campground quiet and perfect for us. The facilities were clean and the staff were very helpful. If the group wants to go back to South Dakota I would suggest staying at Horse Thief Campground.
