“Two great nights in a great Turn of the Century Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2011

My wife and I so enjoy turn of the century hotels (no, not 2000 :-)) It is hard to find them as they are lots of work to bring back to life. Well, the Martin and Mason is alive and well. We are so pleased that we found this interesting jewel. I even used the stairs as opposed to the elevator to get more of the effect of a gold miner who had struck it rich. We spent 2 nights in the Sanderson Suite and it was so nice. The scones were served warm each morning. The coffee and tea were hot. Also complimentary soft drinks and bottle water on our floor was a nice touch. The quaintness of the Martin and Mason allowed the staff to get to know us and that was neat as well. So if you like old hotels this is the place for you. If you like big boxes with no personality, it certainly is not.

We stayed in the suite and the experience was perfect. The people running the operation were incredibly accommodating. No complaints as room was clean and the bed was excellent.

Awesome accommodations - tons of ambiance, amazing decorations and delicious scones for breakfast. Friendly staff, well worth the trip and the slightly higher price tag than other hotels in the area.

The girls were so accommodating to us! The bed was soooooooo soft and comfy and I loved the old claw foot tub in the room. Waking up to warm scones and coffee in the hall was amazing. Everything about our stay was wonderful. We will be back!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights here. We chose it because other TAs had mentioned the quaintness of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. When you are in Deadwood, you want an appropriate cowboy type hotel - and this is what we got. It was a novelty having the claw foot bath in the bedroom - the toilet was in a tiny wee cupboard but that was part of the charm.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, one lady helped us up to our room with our luggage another helped me win on a slot machine! I liked the fact that it had slots on the ground floor. We were given complimentary drinks (wine) both before we went out for dinner and when we returned. Complimentary soft drinks available at all times from a 'fridge on our floor and complimentary tea, coffee and muffins available in the morning - served on fine china.
Centrally located, free parking. I'd definitely recommend it for an unusual but charming stay. Cost $296 for the 2 nights - about £185 - good value.

We booked here based on the other reviews, which you can read that covers the morning scones, refreshment refrigerator and all that.
We stayed in room 11, as other have said the bed was really comfortable, our HVAC worked great and we kept the room nice and cool.

One thing I hadn't seen mentioned, the rooms have transom windows above the doors, 2 in our case since the room has 2 doors. At night (around 9, not always on time) the hall lights are dimmed so it's less annoying, but still somewhat annoying. Seems to me that frosting the glass or just putting some type of curtain would be easier.
The doors have the old-style keyed locks, no way to lock the room from the inside, no deadbolt or chain lock.
The hotel is quite when it's empty, dead quiet. When it's full there's noise up and down the hall, the doors sort of have to be slammed to close, so there's noise there.
One morning at about 4am the hall lights came on full bright, that was unpleasant.

I guess I don't know what else to say, was it unpleasant? No. Was it "the best hotel in the world" as one traveler put it? No, maybe not even the best in Deadwood. Was it worth what I paid? No.

I don't have a lot to say on service, we checked in, were shown our room and that was the end of it, if you need ice you have to go to the casino and ask, and they'll get it from the basement.

I thought the parking was great, we parked in the check in spots and the private lot was very handy, there's a door at the opposite end of the building you can go in to get to the hotel, it's just stairs but sometimes beats the elevator.

Stayed a night here on our way from yellowstone to badlands. Deadwood is a very strange place - not exactly the technicolour world of Calamity Jane! Every single window on the street is filled with dreary slot machines including the downstairs of the Martin & Mason - quite strange to be taking your room key from a lady sitting behind bars (because it's also where they give out the change from for the casino). We also struggled to find anywhere to eat, because they were all upstairs so you couldn't see what you were getting before you went in. The diner at the back of the hotel looked pretty good but wasn't open in the evening. We ended up at a sports cafe called mustang sally's though which was pretty cool. The room itself was also pretty cool - you could definitely imagine butch cassidy or the sundance kid having a soak in the roll top bath! Slightly strange breakfast arrangements too - you go and collect a cookie and coffee from a communal trolley in the hall. V good cookies though!
