Dick and Mary greeted me and my teenagers right away with a smile. They quickly took us up to our room in an old-fashioned elevator, explained a few things (keys, elevator operation, phone number to reach Dick and Mary 24/7, check out procedures, parking) and left us to unpack and adjust. The room instantly became more like an apartment. It included a fully stocked kitchen (microwave, refrigerator, plates/silverware, stove) which made snacking and breakfast very enjoyable and economical. The room included "homey" features such as a kitchen table, coffee table and comfortable sofa/chair. We had a great TV reception and an electric fireplace for extra heat. Our particular room had a prime view of downtown Deadwood, making the atmosphere of the 1880's and gaming a constant fix. Our last day, we spent entirely in Deadwood and were walking distance from Mt. Moriah (grave site of Bill Hickok/Calamity Jane) and endless choices of shopping, eating and awesome backdrops for the family photo album.

This is the hotel to book and get away from all distractions. Our hotel was NOT equipped with internet or phone services, which was just fine with me and my teens!

Deadwood Dicks was the worst thing about Deadwood, SD. The antique shop and bar below the hotel were closed most of the time we stayed. And when they do open, they closed by 5pm. Do not stay in room 413....New York style loft? NO! This place was creepy. All power went out in the building my friend in I were the only ones staying in, and no one would answer the emergency number we were instructed to put into our cell phones. We wandered thru the weird skinny hallways and doors until we found the correct breaker box and fixed the problem ourselves. Then we woke the following morning to one of the staff knocking (more like banging) on our door to see if everything was ok. Anyway....I could go on and on about the dead flies that covered our room (literally 25+ dead flies, 1 in the freezer!) and the flies who fell out of the sky and died right in front of us, but I won't. Just please don't ever stay at Deadwood Dicks.

P.S. - Even the locals hate this place. If you stay here, tell a local you're staying at Deadwood Dick's and watch their reaction.

Mary L, Manager at Deadwood Dick's, responded to this reviewResponded April 4, 2013

Our winter hours are 10am to 6pm Sunday-Thursday and 10am-10pm Friday & Saturday. The circuit breaker popped went too many electrical devices were plugged into one circuit. The breaker box for that room is around the corner from the room, not as stated through hallways and doors. One of the staff did come to check on you the following morning and you stated everything was fine. Flies don’t fall from the sky into the rooms.

This hotel is quite the interesting place - one old creaky elevator, dark long winding hallways, small dark rooms with one tiny little window......not my favorite place to stay to say the least. Our room was decent and clean enough, but I was very happy to check out. The hotel needs updating badly and you get the feeling its not very well taken care of.

We had a great stay at Deadwood Dick's. We spent one day and night in Deadwood this past July. The hotel was wonderful. It has an authentic antique feel to it that really adds to the Deadwood experience. Check in was easy. The elevator is a historic experience. Our room was absolutely huge with large windows overlooking Deadwood. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in...it was like lying on a cloud. The hotel is a short walk from main drag. We had a great time playing the penny slots, seeing the Wild Bill reenactment, and doing all the touristy stuff. Deadwood was a last minute addition on our trip and I'm glad we decided to go. It was a great experience with a real sense of history. Deadwood Dicks just added to the feel. I would definitely stay there again.

Just returned from Deadwood and the Black Hills and really enjoyed staying at Deadwood Dick's. The room was comfortable and unique. It's definitely not like staying at a chain motel and that's great for something different. The price was good and the location is great for walking around town and seeing the sights. Staff were helpful and friendly. We travel with our small dog and appreciated they were pet friendly. Overall a very nice place to stay.
