This is a hard place to review because the layout is so strange. The people who work here are wonderful. They are kind, hard working and very cheerful. We wrote out postcards one day and the man who drives the little shuttle along the length of the property actually volunteered to take them down to the main desk to the mail drop. The people who work in the restaurant were superb and the prices are incredibly cheap and the food is quite good. The room was immaculate. The layout is what is just plain odd. It's a long, skinny property at the far edge of town with separate buildings joined together by a Western style facade that sort of resembles a movie set. The parking garage is up a steep, unpaved incline that has ruts and blind, narrow turns into the garage. We were on a motorcycle and I did not care for this layout at all. The shuttle will pick you up from the motel building and take you down to the main building where the restaurant and casino are located. It's too far from town to walk, so you can take the shuttle to the end of the property and then walk a few hundred feet to the Deadwood Trolley that takes you downtown. We like Deadwood a lot, but found the First Gold just too awkward to be really comfortable, although it is a very good value.

Rooms were spacious. We lucked out and had rooms near the door that exited to the parking garage. They have "on site" shuttle (golf cart) service readily available down the hill to their main building/casino. It's a bit of a walk to catch the Deadwood Trolley from where they can drop you off, which you need to catch to explore the rest of the town and out-laying casinos. There is a parking garage downtown, but the Trolley is easier. The Registration desk isn't always manned, meaning you have to go down to the main building. It was quiet and we enjoyed being there...sans the walking. The price was reasonable for this area.

Room Tip: Good luck! Hotel is hard to navigate to get to the lobby of building 2 where you don't have a hill to go down...but can be done or take on-site shuttle. As mentioned, we lucked out and had rooms 3202 and 3204 by the door to parking garage.

The motel was a ways from downtown although a shuttle you can ride. The rooms were clean but the walls paper thin. We stayed in a King room that was very small.

The room was what you'd expect for the price but the dinner buffet was terrible. It is overpriced and not good. My wife and I seemed to be the only people under the age of 60 staying here. If you are a younger couple going to Deadwood, stay at Cadillac Jacks or somewhere right downtown close to the bar scene. The breakfast buffet was good, however.
