“Great historical hotel in the middle of Deadwood”
Reviewed August 5, 2014

If you are into history Deadwood has it all and this hotel is one of the most historical buildings in Deadwood. If you are into all the modern amenities like pools, hot tubs ect then this probably is not for you but if you want to stay in a great historical building then you will love it. Try to get a room in the front of the building so you can see everything that is going on. Deadwood is where Wild Bill Hickock was shot while playing cards. The Bullock is named after deadwood's first sheriff.

Room Tip: Get a front room especially on the corner.

I stayed one night on a quick weekend trip to the Black Hills and was impressed with the Bullock Hotel. If you are planning on staying at the Bullock Hotel, please understand up front that it is an old building and captures a lot of historic Deadwood charm. That means you have some stairs to climb (an elevator is available), that hallways can be a bit narrow at times, you might encounter some strange foyers, and you'll see some absolutely beautiful woodwork. Some of the rooms can be a bit odd-shaped because of the corner setting of the building on the block, and the floor might creak a bit as you move. If you like a building that has some historical charm, you'll probably enjoy the Bullock. However, if you are looking for something modern with contemporary amenities, then you might be a little disappointed. I thought the price was reasonable for a weekend stay in Deadwood, the location for walking the block and visiting the casinos was perfect, and I would plan on staying there again on my next visit.

Stayed two nights during a four night trip to Black Hills and Badlands. Hotel is well situated to take in the sights of Deadwood and fits well with the atmosphere of the town. Décor is very 1890s but with modern beds and plumbing. The hotel has few amenities - its just a place to sleep, shower and maybe get breakfast. 1st floor is full of slot machines of no interest to me. There were no casino table games. There is one soft drink machine. Ice is available at the bar. Wifi is provided but was week in my third floor room. I sat in the lobby to do email. Parking is free, but its across a 4 lane road. Staff was friendly and helpful. Had breakfast there one morning. It was as good as a typical dinner would serve. I booked my stay through Deadwood.com and saved about $50 over booking directly with the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for room at the rear of the hotel for a quieter night

As soon as my wife and I came in sight of The Bullock Hotel, it's "I"-appeal was evident. The old brick architecture of the storied West, draped in its own red neon light and paneled with a dark-brown wood is a sight to behold. Close your eyes and you can almost hear Wild Bill Hickok playing at a card game in the ground floor casino.

The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms modern with an old-West retro façade. We found the beds to be incredibly comfortable. The only negative concerns the window. It is only covered by wooden blinds. Having no blackout curtains, the room is bathed in light at sunrise. I can sleep through almost anything, including the morning light. The only thing I can't sleep through is my wife's displeasure. And this displeasure manifests itself during light-interrupted sleep. If you suffer the same frailties, plan accordingly.

A curious side note: whether by accident or design, our bathroom toilet did not have a lid of any kind. Only the seat.

We stayed one night after Badlands and Mount Rushmore heading West. Nice atmosphere once you've past the stupid casino stuff. Staff very friendly, helpful and professional. Room was spacious corner looking out on back toward parking lot across the street. Large bathroom. Comfortable bed. Bit of street noise from the big throaty hogs in particular. Free parking out back is simple when you read the signs and know where it it is. It would have helped if it was on Web site. Breakfast in the restaurant is great. Great staff, great food, huge quantities. Good start to the day.

Management makes a stab at keeping the hotel in a 1890's motif but that is where it ends. Service was lackluster the staff seemed to really care less weather you stayed there or not. The Bully" restaurant" serves as the bar at night. The meals served during the day are the worst! We attempted two meals , the first was breakfast the food and service was both less than poor and could care less about the servers personal problems. Lunch was just as bad and when mentioned to the management they were not surprised or concerned.

I made reservations for our large group three months in advance with the general manager, Lycy. When we arrived there was a glitch. Instead of trying to figure out how to fix the problem the general manager sat down at computer and started dropping the F bomb and blaming her "stupid staff" for the problem until I handed her my cell phone
with the email confirmation she personally had sent to me three months earlier. Suddenly she was able to make the room situation work. Very poor first impression.
