Reviewed September 10, 2004

Family of 5 stayed here in July, 2004 as part of a cross-country trip. To be honest, I didn't expect much from this hotel. I knew that Deadwood had become a very touristy destination and that the hotel was part of a casino. I was just hoping for a place we could lay our heads for the night that would be a little different from the usual highway hotels. We happened to stay here on a Saturday night and arrived sort of late in the evening after driving all day. The town was hopping! There was no parking to be found, but the hotel offered valet parking for a small charge. As soon as I walked up to the front desk and gave my name, the desk clerk seemed to know all about us! She knew without looking at anything where we were from and that we had two king rooms reserved. Each room came with a little packet with coupons, etc and there was a casino card with my name on it! (which I didn't get a chance to test out). We needed a roll-away bed for one of the rooms and it was delivered promptly and for no charge. Although we always stay in non-smoking rooms, I had made these reservations at the last minute after a change in plans, and there were no non-smoking rooms available. Since this was a casino, which seem to attract chain smokers, I expected the smoking rooms to be pretty foul. But they didn't reek! In fact, they smelled 100% less smokey than the non-smoking rooms we had encountered in Carlsbad, NM. Everything about the room was nicer than the usual Hampton Inn. The soaps and complimentary toiletries were higher quality. The bathroom had very nice marble or stone of some kind around the tub. There were FIVE big pillows on the bed. There was supposed to be wireless Internet access in the rooms but we couldn't get it to work. But there was an ethernet line that was fast and free and worked just fine. The complimentary breakfast had thestandard selections, but everything was fresh and there were two attendants keeping everything replenished. Even though breakfast was supposed to end at 10 a.m. they let in some people who came late and didn't try to rush them. There are all kinds of shops and restaurants to walk to in Deadwood. Mt. Rushmore is about 45 minutes away by car. We were very pleasantly surprised at the Hampton Inn in Deadwood and would not hesitate to stay here again if we're ever back in the area.
