“Avoid the restaurant”
Reviewed October 29, 2007

We stayed here knowing it was a Hampton Inn property. The room was large, clean, and typical Hampton Inn. Our friends, staying in another room, had a problem with the heat and the front desk did nothing about the problem until the third call . A technician arrived and decided it was broken and told our friends to leave the room for several hours while they worked on it. They did not receive an apology or any compensation for a night without heat and several hours without a room.
The buffet was horrible--hot items were cold and cold items were hot. Steamed shrimp were dry to the point of being unchewable. All vegetables were mush. Potatoes were out of a box. Prime rib was okay quality except it was cold with fat congealed on/around it. The bread pudding was the best thing we ate. Breakfast was as bad as dinner and we dared not try lunch.
Stay here, but eat somewhere else.

Hotel is at the end of the "strip" of casinos but only about two short blocks away from ALL of the "short" action. Deadwood is not exactly Las Vegas. With that said, the Hampton offers limited "free" parking but, once you get a space, you really don't need to move your vehicle. There is also Valet parking for only $5 a day which, in my opinion, is a bargain. I would certainly stay in this same property if I return to Deadwood...and it is a FUN place to visit.

  • Liked — Staff and location.
  • Disliked — Parking......could be a problem on a really busy weekend.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn ,Deadwood on May 14th.

The reason we stayed was that we were driving east on interstate 90 and originally intended to stay in Gillette Wyoming.

According to Gillette locals, weekdays {Monday thru Wednesday} are busy with workers who stay in the hotels.

Days Inn had vacancies but was abysmally filthy. So filthy [soiled public areas, non flushing running toilet in our room with toilet paper already in the bowl} we immmediately checked out.

While the Gillette Hampton was filled , they reserved us a room at their Deadwood property about 90 minutes or so further east.

The room in Deadwood was one of the best if not the best Hampton we have stayed at. In addition to a front row view of the historic town the room was oversized with a king bed.

The vanities were tall. The bed had a feather top and lots of extra pillows. And it was quiet.Parking is outdoors across the street.

There are very few food opportunities in Deadwood at 11pm at night. However the breakfast, the next day was quite comprehensive from heathy cereal to biscuits and gravy.

As far as space, quiet , and cleanliness the room may have been my favorite of all the Hamptons we have stayed. in.

Whether you are passing thru via Interstate 90 or visiting the Black Hills{and we have done both} this hotel would be a great place to stay.

we got into town on monday nite and started our hotel search - we'd enjoyed the hamptons we'd stayed in previously, so hoped this one would be consistent and sure enough it was! we got a double queen room and it was very comfortable and roomy - i just love their beds and bedding!

the hotel is new and they do have parking issues, but we were fortunate to find a good spot and were able to keep it through our 2 nites without a problem since we could walk or take the trolley all over - so get a good spot and stay put!

the casino was nice and roomy so we made a few deposits and withdrawals there...

the hotels' complimentary breakfast on our floor was an expanded continental fare, and it was fine so we ate there both mornings... we'd heard good things about the hotels' restaurant buffet so we tried it one evening and it was alright, but not great, so we didn't return to it, and instead opted to walk to different restaurants in the area... the gem (al swearingen's, of course!), had a good restaurant upstairs...

we'd recommend visiting the adams museum, the cemetery (if in town you have to pay tribute to wild bill hickock!), the celebrity museum (and the garage next door to it), and if you have kids there is a kids arcade in the basement of the hickock hotel - our 9 yr old liked it and $5 went a long way, but some machines were down or not working right, so beware...

and mt rushmore is close enough that we had to go see that, and the visitors center is quite impressive and informative... we'll definitely be back to south dakota, as we found there was a lot more to see and do there than we had time for this trip!

This hotel is conveniently located on the lower end of the main drag in Deadwood. There is a casino located under the same roof on the street level floor, and also a restaurant that offered a seafood buffet on the weekend at a reasonable price. The largest deficit to this facility is room; everything is cramped. Parking can be very hectic even though valet parking is available. Be prepared to incorporate a "little" extra time for retrieving one's parked car and also parking the vehicle, even if using valet parking. The elevators are small as well as the rooms. We stayed in a standard two double bed room and it was very cramped. It was one of the "tightest" rooms I have ever stayed in at any other Hampton Inn. The breakfast area was also very small. However, one can walk to almost any facility in downtown Deadwood from this locale. Sturgis, Mount Rushmore, and other places of interest are nearby and easily driven form this Hampton Inn.

The weather outside was frightful but we were warm and toasty at the Hampton Inn in Deadwood. The location is excellent for spending a weekend in Deadwood. The room was clean, nicely decorated and quiet. We used the pool, which was very clean and warm. We had dinner reservations at the Deadwood Social Club which is upstairs from Saloon #10. My husband had buffalo and it was delicious and we had great service. We had our best gambling at the Franklin Hotel, but were impressed with all the casinos. Deadwood is a great winter get away and the Hampton was a perfect place to stay.

Tough place to park, tough to unload your car, and the pool is small - as is the room - probably the smallest room we have stayed in in a while. But it is clean and new on the plus side. People were extremely nice though and kids were welcomed.
