What an awesome adventure to our trip. Barbara Jean is a wonderful tour guide. She's very patient with the little ones and involves them in her stories of the old mines. This is a trip well worth taking! She takes you in and you feel like you've known her forever.

“Best part of our trip!”
Reviewed July 13, 2012 via mobile

My family (me, my husband, 10 year old daughter, and 7 year old son) had an amazing time with Barbara Jean, her helper, and her wonderful horses. None of us had much experience with horses, and she made us feel comfortable and safe. She picked us up at the road in an old pickup with a puppy, then gave us riding instructions and background information on each of the horses we rode. My kids were hooked! The trail was interesting and beautiful, and the history stories kept us all entertained. She could charge twice what she does, and out would still be worth it. You don't want to miss this.

“Great!”
Reviewed June 25, 2012

Barbara Jean could not run a better operation. The booking was easy and Barbara Jean promptly returned phone calls. She gave us great directions to her stables. Met us exactly at the time and place she said she would be. She paid great attention to each rider's skills/experience to match them to a suitable horse, and placed a great emphasis on safety.

During the trail ride, Barbara Jean made local history come alive for our children. We loved learning about the mining history of this area, and it was great introduction to the area's rich and colorful history.

Barbara Jean's enthusiastic reviews on TripAdvisor are well-deserved. Great job!

“Best Time in Deadwood!!!”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

If you are going to be near Deadwood, and are looking for a great time with your family, you will not go wrong with Blacktail Horseback Tours!! Barbara Jean and her crew are incredible!! We were in Deadwood for a few days and my wife called Barbara Jean in advance as she was (deservedly) the # 1 attraction in the area. Not only was she great on the phone, but she gave my wife a lot of other great tips of restaurants and fun things to do in the area.

Her ranch is located just 1.5 miles SW of Deadwood off of RT 14. As she said people ask, the EXACT GPS coordinates of the bottom of her drive is 44.22.19.76 N by 103.45.43.64 W. Mind you, her ranch is located about a half a mile up the road, and 300 feet higher elevation wise. It’s quite the walk and she will pick you up if need be in her 4x4. Our kids were thrilled as not only were they going to ride their own horse (the twins are 5), but there was a fresh litter of Golden Retrievers! Once the forms were signed, Barbara and her crew assessed each rider capabilities. After a quick roping lesson, the kids were led by the crews horses, and her crew actually walked the trail with us (god bless them!). Everyone gets helmets, and despite the very sloping trails, you always felt VERY safe. Along the way Barbara stopped and gave us historical perspective on the land and history. Very nice touch. Lastly she took us up to the top of the ridge for pictures over the entire valley. Her dogs run along and Lucky will even get in the photo with you! The view is at 5400 feet which is incredible!! The entire ride was 2 hours. We were not 200 feet from her ranch when the kids BEGGED for us to go back the next day! Although Barbara Jean was booked, she invited us back to visit the puppies and visit later that week. We actually hiked the long walk up the lane to bring cupcakes to the girls. Barbara Jean was so nice to take time to visit with us again, and my son got to hone his roping skills with a real cowboy (thanks Don!!!!).

I cannot stress enough, this is a real MUST if you are in Deadwood. This is real trail riding that your family will love and talk about forever.

Thank you Barbara Jean and Crew! We WILL see you again!!
