“Great stay”
Reviewed October 5, 2010

Stayed here for one night on our cross country trip as they were one of the few pet friendly options in town. The room was fantastic and king size bed was incredibly comfortable. Sheets were also very soft- we slept like logs! The pet friendly rooms all have two doors, one leading to the parking lot and a dedicated grassy pet area- very pro pet owner. They even gave us a few dog teats when we checked in. The grill restaurant had excellent food (I went with the salmon) and the meal was fresh and high quality. The workout room was clean and treadmills even have tv's attached.
The only cons is that the location is not walking distance to downtown Deadwood. Also the first floor non smoking rooms reeked like smoke that had been attempted to be covered up with cleaning solution. Maybe because they are close to the Casino.

Overall a great comfortable place to stay after a long day of driving.

We are so glad you and your pet were able to enjoy your time here in the Black Hills. We are dedicated to remaining like your home away from home while pursuing your travels. It is wonderful that you were able to enjoy our many amenities to include the restaurants and workout room. We also have recently gone to a smoke free policy throughout the building. We hope to have you as our guest again soon.

This is a new place that has everything, we got a special birthday rate (belong to club).
The rooms and bath are awesome, food is also very good, a bit high, but OK for a light meal. Be sure and eat @ the First Gold Buffet down on the strip-- great price for seniors, plenty of good fresh made to order omelet's.

We spent 2 nights at The Lodge and it was excellent. The hotel is new, clean and quiet. There is an indoor pool, fitness center and Casino. The staff were nice and helpful. The rooms are large and very quiet. There are 2 restaurants there and the food was pretty good. This would be a better stay than downtown which looks a little run down.

My partner and I stayed here on the second night of our 2 week road trip into the West. The room was super clean and had plush. Very relaxing and comfortable. The check in really put a damper on our experience as we were greeted by the clerk stating that we were lucky they had a room as they had us down as arriving the next day. While there was a change in dates, we had confirmed the change with the Front Desk Manager via email TWICE. We gad also confirmed that we were traveling with our two smaller dogs and wanted a ground floor room. That was also confirmed by the Front Desk manager in an email. None of these confirmations were in their system and we ended up on the second floor despite our proof and complaints. The clerk stated that they had no ground floor rooms available. They did give us a coupon for $20 to use in the bar or dining areas. We should have asked to speak to the manager but after a long day on the road and based on the information that they were almost full we reluctantly accepted the room. Based on our observations, I think that there were unoccupied rooms on the ground floor. We had a great dinner in the dining room and ate breakfast there the next day. Our server was friendly, attentive and the food was wonderful evident of a chef on site that knows what they are doing. This is newer property and was clean and very comfortable. It is probably the nicest place to stay in Deadwood. Despite the room location problem, we would stay here again and recommend to others.

I traveled to Deadwood for a business meeting, but brought my fiance and his 11-year-old daughter. That area of the country is simply stunning and we took a side trip through the Badlands and on Iron Mountain Drive the day before we arrived. The Lodge is actually out of town, but up on a ridge. It was quiet and there was plenty of parking. The staff was okay, and the rooms were not as nice as I had expected from a newer "resort". The pool smelled of chorline (you could smell it about a mile away), but was fine. There was a small porch area with fire pits out back that were pretty (but no privacy). They've recently gone to no-smoking, but the casino area still wreaked of smoke. Luckily, there was a door to the sidewalk outside so I could avoid having to walk through that area. I ate at the in-house restaurant and ordered their "famous" cinnamon rolls... only to find that the chef hadn't made any that day??? Okay???? We also ordered room service one night... three cups of ice cream. It arrived 45 minutes later, completely melted. They took off the charge from our room (of course). The meeting facilities were in alignment to any other meeting room in a hotel. The stay was fine, uneventful, and a little unmemorable.

Our family stayed here during Independence Day holiday week on a sightseeing trip around the Black Hills area. The lodge opened in 2009 and was very clean and lacked wear and tear. Our rate varied from $167-200 per night. This was good value for the quality and the time of year.

We had a “family suite” -- very comfortably decored and with all standard amenities. It did not have a microwave, but did have a mini-fridge, quick-brew complimentary coffee, and an iPod docking station. Free wireless Wi-Fi worked well. The “family suite” was really just a big room with an adjacent parlor area. Nevertheless, the adults were able to have coffee and watch the morning news without waking up the little people. There are very good, free laundry facilities as well.

One of the best features of the hotel is the huge indoor water playground. With no water deeper than 3.5 feet, it is pretty safe for kids. It is a really fantastic, family-friendly feature. Part of the lodge is a casino, which turned out to be – for people with no particular interest in gambling – a perfectly fine situation. The clientele was low-key, older, quiet; the casino is a separate area from the hotel and should not be a deterrent for families with young kids.

The town of Deadwood is not walking distance and parking there is difficult (the lodge has a shuttle and there is free metered parking in the town after 8pm), so we ate a couple of meals at the lodge. The lodge has two restaurants – one upscale, one low-brow. We ate at the less expensive one and the food was good and reasonably priced (shock!), though service varied from good to blah.

Downsides: The front-desk staff was only as helpful as you asked them to be. They did not really extend themselves. The major issue we ran into was noise from upstairs. Our first set of neighbors – the Clampetts – brought a keg of beer onto the balcony and drank, banged, hollered, and yakked late into the night. The next morning, our own balcony below was splattered with brew and cigarette ashes. We complained and had no more trouble with Jed and Co. Our second set of neighbors – the Stompingtons – apparently enjoyed calisthenics late into the evening. Thus, sleep quality was not great. The beds were hard and hurt my back. The lodge also gets my 2010 award for World’s Slowest Elevator.

The Deadwood area is not a particularly good launching pad for sightseeing around the Black Hills because it is pretty far north from sites like Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park. On the whole, though, the Deadwood Lodge was a good experience, we were very satisfied, and I would recommend it.

Hope this helps.

.

This is a 4-star as far as I'm concerned. The hotel is exactly what it looks like on line. We have a room with two queens and a beautiful view of the mountains. The room is huge with a microwave, mini fridge, coffee pot, tastefully decorated furnishings and spotless. The hotel staff was very accommodating when we checked in. The kids would love the pool area with a pirate ship in the center. There is also a spa and exercise room for the adults. We booked a "stay two nights and get the third free" package. After traveling for 10 days we are relaxing and enjoying our stay. It is elegant.
