My wife and I were in town for an afternoon appointment and we live about ninety miles away. So we decided that we would try out this Italian restaurant which had come highly recommended by a friend back home. It was difficult to find for a first time visitor, but once we found it, the results were all positive from then on. I had the scallops with artichokes and baby tomatoes with pasta. My wife had a shrimp plate with pasta. We both shared the tuna appetizer. The maple walnut crusted edible bowl with fruits and ice cream in it was a delectable final dessert. This was early on a weeknight so we had a great seat and enjoyed a panoramic view of the Columbia skyline as well as the long bridge over the Congaree River where you could see the capitol building. Cailin provided us with excellent service all evening. We are looking into having a group birthday celebration here later this summer.

Veal piccata was very good. Bolognese pasta was outstanding. Would have asked for different vegetable if I knew it was going to be asparagus. A little pretentious but great service.

Al’s has an incredible ambience with great views of downtown Columbia and the Gervais St bridge. Although a little on the pricey side, the food and service are always outstanding!

To say the food and service at Al's was dismal is an understatement. Strarting drinks took forever to get. Wine glasses were severely under filled as were two martinis which were both warm. Had to ask for water and refills throughout the meal. Dinner continued to go downhill. Salads were okay, but no bread available until the entrees came out.

Duck was not seared and undercooked. Flounder was fried so much that it was totally dry with no meat. Sea bass was good, risotto was was crunchy.

Service was pathetic. Don't waste your time or money. Simply not worth it.

We won't go back and it felt like the staff and management wants it that way.

Al's is one of the very best restaurants in Columbia. The atmosphere and food are excellent. Try to get a table in the upstairs glassed-in portion of the restaurant.
