We made it to Walterboro late on a Saturday night and just could not stomach $125 for eight hours at the Holiday Inn so we decided to be adventurous and try out a 'budget motel'.
The girl at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful and quickly checked us into a room on the first floor. We paid the roughly $36 with Visa but noted another person coming in after us paid in cash.
The room was old, tired and smelled musty with a hint of mildew tossed in for good measure. The towels must were coarser than sandpaper and were half the size of normal bath towels. The mattresses came from a "too cheap to sleep" sale.
The sheets were clean. The roof kept us sheltered from the elements. Unfortunately, it also served as shelter for bugs - one of them the largest beetle bug I have ever seen in my life.
My husband is still joking that he has never, in the entire time he has known me, seen me up and moving and out the door before 7am - except once when we had a flight to catch.
For $35 I supposed you get what you pay for - just go in with open eyes and a closed nose.More
