“This is the only tea plantation in the mainland USA.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2010

We were looking for a garden or plantation to visit in the Charleston SC area when we stumbled on the Charleston Tea Plantation in nearby Wadmalaw Island. This attraction is only a half hour out of Charleston so it is convenient for most visitors to the city. The Charleston Tea Plantation covers 127 acres with over 100,000 tea plants, an on-site tea processing plant and a visitors center. A 30 minute trolley tour of the tea fields is offered for $10.00 per person and a short self-guided "factory" tour is free. Also free is unlimited ice tea in the visitors center. This was a great find. We found it to be an interesting and well worthwhile attraction to visit.

“America's Only Tea Plantation!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2010

Good stop on the drive between Charleston & Savannah.

Convenient to stop here & at Irvin-House Vineyards/Firefly Distillery since they are fairly close together.

The Tea Plantation is off a country road with light traffic. So the drive is quiet & relaxing.

Free 15 minute tour of the processing facilities behind the gift shop was mildly interesting. We decided not to go on the trolley tour.

The gift shop has a variety of delicious teas for to drink until you are full. Then you can buy the ones you like.

“Neat, but a little over priced for the Trolley Tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 24, 2010

As other reviews have said, it is rather neat to see the only tea plantation in the US (or North America, for that matter). The grounds are attractive, with live oaks dripping spanish moss, huge rockers, well-placed benches. The tea fields themselves look like large bushes that have been meticulously trimmed. The trolley has a pre-recorded tour that you drive along slowly to, with the trolley driver adding a few small details as well. It lasts probably 20 minutes and costs $10 per person. It wasn't exorbitant, but you really just go out, drive in a circle thru a couple of fields and come back.
The factory tour is free, again prerecorded narrative on flat screens this time. It runs beside the factory floor, and is pretty informative. Neat to see how incredibly clean the factory floor is.
The gift shop has free samples of the iced teas they are featuring that day. They have loose and packed teas, adorable tea pots, infusers, etc. They also have a DVD by Bigelow (with whom they partner) about tea and its history.
Your purchases are handed to you in a very attractive reusable tote bag with the tea logo on it. Very cute!
The prices for the tea were not super-inflated, surprisingly. I loved the Breakfast tea! If you get hooked on the American Classic, it is available in local grocery stores as well!

“This place is wonderful for group visits...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2010

My husband and I do group travel for seniors here in the middle Georgia area. On the advice of friend, we included The Charleston Tea Plantation in our itinerary on a recent trip to Charleston. This place was a big hit with everyone. The factory tour was very informative, the gift shop was delightful, and the front porch with rockers was very inviting....we hated to leave. They give everyone in the group a gift bag whether you buy anything or not and you'll never meet a nicer staff anywhere. Southern hospitablity abounds surely abounds here. When in Charleston - don't miss it!
