Let's speak about the good first. The location of this vacation rental property is excellent. Surfside Beach has predominatly 3 story condominium buildings or beach homes along the ocean. The population remains manageable for enjoying the beach without having to trip over blankets and beach umbrellas while staking out your favorite sandy spot on the beach. The unit itelf was spacious for our family (total 5 and some day guests) and offered a very nice deck to view the ocean and beach.
Let's talk about someof the bad and ugly. I'll focus on the kitchen first. The condo kitchen was stocked with more mismatched pots/lids, plastic containers/lids, dishes, glasses that I have ever seen in a rental. I'm not expecting Emerile cookware, but at least clean and functional. Worn out non-stick pans, sauce pans without lids and dirty/greasy fry pans and oven trays really did not impress me. If you like to cook, this is not the place to stay ..... or pack up your own kitchen and bring it along. The worst was a fry pan that was put away covered with cooked on crud (photo supplied).
Although this property is a no-pet site, we did find a few cockroaches large enough to leash and take for a walk (photo supplied).
Bathroom shower curtain liners were dirty with slime and mold at the bottoms. Also, there was some mold growing on the caulking in the tub area (photo supplied).
I assess 2 underlying problems here. First is the owner who has the responsibility to supply a stocked kitchen for cooking and eating. It may irritate me to eat off 5 styles of dishes, flatware, glasses, cups, etc., but it unacceptable to supply (or not replace) pans that are just unacceptable to cook and prepare food. Quite honestly, it looked liked a flea market acquisition collection.
The second is the property management service which provides cleaning services after the departure of each guest. And each guest does pay a mandatory cleaning fee. There should be sufficient time to undertake a thorough inspection of the food preparation items, pots, pans , etc. for cleanliness and inspect other areas for attention (i.e., showers for mold). However, since there is a mass check-out time for the island, I suspect the management company's cleaning crews are limited in time and perform only superficial duties (vaccuum, clean windows, counter surfaces, etc.).
The location of this property is wonderful. Paying a premium price for an 'on the beach' property, I do expect it to be clean, free from pets (cockroaches), and have a satisfactory stocked kitchen.
I did report all items to the management company. They seemed sympathetic, but not terribly excited. I did not asked for any action or on-site repairs (blinds in master bedroom were broken), but managed myself, providing re-cleaning duties where appropriate.
Outdoor building and grounds maintenance by the same property managemnt company were very good. The pool was clean and cleaned frequently during our stay.
I would have rated this unit a '1' based on cleanliness opposite the cost, but upgraded and assigned a '2' based on great location.
