Willy Taco is the perfect example of why I love to visit college towns. They always seem to attract creative restaurants offering good food at good prices in a fun atmosphere
We ate at Willy Taco during a recent visit, and it rocks. It's difficult to categorize this restaurant. Although the menu is Mexican themed, the cuisine is not your typical Mexican, and even Tex-Mex is a real stretch. It's definitely not fine dining, but the chef obviously knows what he's doing. The ingredients are blended very nicely to create great flavors. I had a couple tacos - one included coconut shrimp with bacon, pimento cheese and a delicious sauce. The other taco included mojo pork with cabbage and salsa verde, reminding me of flavors from Key West's Cuban restaurants. My wife's blackened mahi taco had a mango chutney sauce and jicama slaw - not your everyday Mexican menu. We tend to be picky about our seafood, but both the shrimp and mahi could have stood on their own in any of SC's coastal restaurants.
Willy Taco offers a good selection of craft beers and a neat tequila bar. If you enjoy creative food in a casual, fun, music-filled atmosphere, I highly recommend it, but be prepared for a wait. It has very quickly gotten popular with both the locals and the college crowd. I can't wait to go back.
