“Would love to go back!”
Reviewed June 5, 2014

I was traveling on business and was able to get a corporate rate to stay here - I was tired of staying at the local Hampton Inn and did some research on local bed and breakfasts. I stumbled across this location and was excited to learn that they could offer me a corporate rate, as I was a single traveler and would be gone for the greater part of the day and evening. The innkeepers were great, made my stay very comfortable, and it was such a quaint location. I was even able to pet some of the farm animals. I would love to visit again when I am not on business to really enjoy the inn. Thanks again!

We stayed on 5/27/13 for one night and the farm and B&B was great. We stayed in the Hummingbird room and it was large with a 2 beds and a loveseat. The room also included a bathroom within the room. Julie was great. Attention to detail was great. When we asked about places to eat Julie recommended the Lighhouse restaurant and printed directions. The following morning at breakfast, one of the couples we sat with were going fishing and Julie printed out directions to different places in a route so they were not driving all over the place wasting time without the couple asking for them.

Fresh cookies were available during the day and the small refrig upstairs with soda and water was nice. Snacks, popcorn, coffee, and tea were available all day. Breakfast was great, eggs in a basket with potatoes and fresh fruit. We will stay again when we visit the lakes area for hiking.

Room Tip: The Hummingbird room was in back of the staircase and away from the small refrig that everyone uses...

Our family met at the Sunrise Farm this past memorial day weekend to celebrate our daughter's 29th birthday. Julie had prepared a great carrot cake, ice cream and decorated our room prior our arrival! We had all planned on participating in a bike race, so she made sure we had breakfast in time to go ...Both Julie and Jeff are so gracious and accommodating. The rooms are bright, beautiful and reflect the beauty of the South. Julie's homemade chocolate cookies are delish!
We have stayed at the Sunrise Farm previously, and plan on making it our home away from home when we visit the area!

Room Tip: The upstairs suite is bright and very comfortable for 2 couples!

Just what is a B&B? They certainly don’t appeal to everyone. If you value your privacy above all else, then a B&B, with its communal breakfast area, where guests meet and introduce themselves, and share stories, is not for you. We originally assumed that B&Bs would appeal only to the middle-aged. That’s why we are both astonished and pleased when young couples, sometimes with children, stay at a B&B, since they bring interesting new perspectives.

Well, you either hit it off with the innkeepers or you don’t. If you do, that’s wonderful. They become like an extended family, and you are genuinely interested in them and their lives. To truly enjoy a B&B, you must first dismiss any innate shyness you may have and bring your curiosity when you visit. Telling stories is a Southern tradition, as is the practice of eating with strangers and sharing parts of your lives with them. These traditions of hospitality, which all B&Bs everywhere share, we nevertheless associate in our minds with the South and with things Southern. And, since we both claim a Southern heritage, that’s a good thing.

Sunrise Bed & Breakfast, in Salem, South Carolina, is a place of conviviality. It is, in fact, our favorite B&B. While it may not have the ambience of that very expensive one on the Battery in Charleston, or the luxury of some others we’ve visited, it has a certain charm that makes it unique and refreshing. And so we return often to re-experience the pleasures that brought us there originally, but with a heightened awareness of all that a B&B can afford the guest who needs to get away from daily routines and seek something new and exciting.

Julie and Jeff Pierce are consummate professionals, but foremost they are friendly and inviting. When she has time away from sports and academics, their daughter, Madison, who makes a killer frittata, often helps them. We are especially glad that the Pierces are knowledgeable about hiking waterfall trails, which is one of our abiding passions. The voice of water speaks to some remote part of us and connects us intimately to the life of the earth.

In the immediate area there are scores of hiking trails, most with waterfalls to cap off the rigor of the climb with the diamond beauty that only falling water (or a fountain) evokes and the feeling of peace and relaxation they engender when you finally reach them.

Julie and Jeff are themselves avid hikers and know all about the local trails because they’ve visited all of those in the vicinity of Salem. (Within a 15-mile radius of the Sunrise Farm, there are quite literally hundreds of hiking trails.) The area is also a good one for bicyclists who welcome the challenge and beauty of mountain trails without having to face traffic.

Sometimes staying at a B&B you have the feeling that you are merely tolerated guests, welcome primarily for the money you bring, but useful for not much else. This is not the case at Sunrise Farm. All of the visitors are welcomed and treated as guests should be, with friendliness and graciousness. The best innkeepers are open and curious; with ease they create a dialog with their guests and soon discover what they want to achieve from their visit, whether exercise, relaxation, or a combination of both. We certainly count Julie and Jeff among that short list of the very best innkeepers.

For a B&B situated in a tiny town snug in the mountains, miles from any city, there are so many things to do, in addition to hiking. You may wish to explore the World of Energy at Oconee Nuclear Station in Seneca. Or, take a drive over to Devils Fork State Park, where you can hike several trails, including the Oconee Bell Nature Trail, an easy 1-mile loop trail that received its name for the rare wildflower that can be found along the foot path. For film buffs, there is a Red Box at the corner Dollar Store just a few minutes’ walk or drive away. You can even go online to reserve a film so it will be waiting for you. You are also welcome to go downstairs at Sunrise and select any of the family’s DVDs to watch on a peaceful evening when you simply want to relax with a good movie.

For children and the young at heart, the farm boasts a number of current residents, including miniature ponies, alpacas, goats, and a potbellied pig. There are also several cats visible at any given time and scores of birds at feeding stations along the porch, though not in the same space. The resident sergeant-at-arms is Buddy, a small white fluffy terrier mix who may cause you to forget the strict house rules against feeding him scraps.

Julie, the full-time innkeeper and heart of the B&B, is the kind of energetic, comely woman that you immediately trust. Her candor and sincerity are obvious. She has many of the qualities that one would want to see in an ideal daughter-in-law. She is also a darn fine cook.

The breakfasts that are served at Sunrise are ample and delicious. They are served in a common room downstairs. The fare of the morning is posted on a blackboard in the room, just in case you need to pique your interest in what is to come. Jeff often is on hand to serve up your choice of juice and to bring coffee. The meal starts with a fresh bread choice--this could be muffins or perhaps, if you are very lucky, Julie's special Amish Friendship Bread. This is followed with a fruit cup (fresh) or a tasty yogurt fruit parfait. Then the main course makes its appearance, as if at this point you really need more to eat. The main fare could be the aforementioned frittata, scrambled eggs with fresh sausage, or a divine quiche.

Jeff, while not busy helping Julie with the inn or feeding the numerous animals, is a physical therapist. Talking with him for just a few minutes will make you want him to be your own PT if you ever need one. Like his wife, he is candid and sincere. Together, they make a stay at Sunrise Farm a pleasurable experience, and one that will make you eager to return

As many times as we have returned to Sunrise, we have only stayed in one room, the Morning Glory. The vista from the windows is of the back of the house and the surrounding fields. The room has its own private bath, with shower. The sink is in the room itself, which for some may take a little getting used to. There is a small, wall-mounted television (with cable) in the room. We would not recommend viewing a foreign film, since it is somewhat challenging to read the subtitles on the screen. But, with so much outdoors calling you, television may not be foremost in your mind. The bed is cozy and comfortable and there is a small sitting area in the corner of the room.

The innkeepers keep a small pantry area on the second floor, adjacent to the guest rooms, stocked with cereal bars, crackers, and the like. There is a small refrigerator in which you may store a personal bottle of wine next to the supplied water, juice, and sodas. There is also a small microwave in which to heat a small frozen meal, just in case you can't leave the ambience of the farm to make your way to an eating establishment.

So, forget your cares and woes, and plan a trip to the mountains of South Carolina and to the welcoming call of Sunrise Farm Bed & Breakfast. You'll be glad you did.

Wow! You've left me almost speechless. Thank you SO much. Your gracious review came at a time when I needed it most. After a day marked by conflict that left me feeling very badly, I opened my email, expecting to receive another "blow". But, instead, I received heaven-sent encouragement. What a gift! Jeff and Madison have been richly blessed, as well. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Sincerely,
Julie

My friend and I stayed at Sunrise Farm last week, and we fell totally in love with the house itself, the grounds, the animals, and the beautiful furnishings! I can not say enough about the warmth and graciousness shown by Julie and Jeff...they made us feel right at home. The homemade cookies and delicious breakfasts spoiled us, and the snack table was a thoughtful idea. I have been fortunate to travel the US and Europe, staying in many bed and breakfasts, and I have decided the one in Salem, SC is my favorite! I cannot wait to go back and bring my grandchildren!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Farmhouse suite which was perfect for my friend and myself. We were able to have se...

We stayed three nights with our two teenage sons at the Inn. Breakfast was wonderful and the kids enjoyed the cookies and snacks. Our oldest is gluten free and Julie even picked him up some delicious gf cookies of his own. The newly redecorated parlor is very nice and cozy and we enjoyed the fireplace in it as well. They also have dvd selections and a book exchange basket which is fun. My husband and boys enjoyed feeding the animals treats after breakfast, and got to know the personalities of the animals too. Julie serves fresh, organic, home-made and natural meals, including meats, we loved it! And, the coffee was excellent, something that is make or break for me since I've given up dairy. We highly recommend this B&B! Btw, there are glasses and a corkscrew available if you want to bring your own wine, as well as a little fridge with water and sodas available.:)

Room Tip: Magnolia room sleeps 4 comfortably with great view of huge Magnolia tree out front.

On a side note...our room with the beautiful view of the Southern Magnolia tree on the front of the Main House is the *Hummingbird Room*. (Perhaps we should consider changing the name to "The Magnolia Room"! :-) )

Stayed at this wonderful bed and breakfast while searching for property for a possible relocation. Spent 3 nights in the Rose Cottage which was perfect. The setting is beautiful, the home-made breakfasts and cookies were just wonderful. The hospitality that Julie and Jeff provided was warm and inviting. You really can't ask for more. Will most definitely return.
