This fort is very historic. It is fun to be able to walk around the fort and go inside some of the old rooms. When we first came to St. Helena Island this fort was covered in vines and grown up brush, since being taken over by a group to save this fort, they have cleared the brush and vines and it's now in better shape to visit. It is situated on Port Royal Sound and the water view from this is very pretty, just across the water is Parris Island.

“Just as everyone says”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

This is truly a hidden treasure. It is an old fort that is wide open to explore. When I was there, there were 4 local boys playing hide and seek and that was it. It was serene walking around the remains with no other sounds.

“Hidden treasure”

Awesome place tucked away behind a trailer park. It is not well preserved at all. People are allowed to do what they please, which did make it more fun to explore. It is much bigger than I expected and offered something new and historical for us to do. Also a deserted Beach open to the public lies right on the other side. Cool, free, bring shoes and bug spray

A bit out of the way. Use your GPS. You will find the remnants of an old fort. It is a great place to take pictures in all seasons.

“Well camouflaged”

Sign posted to explain purpose of the fort and who it was named after. Crumbling in disrepair. No maintenance being performed. Great view of Beaufort river and Parris island. Great example of coastal fortifications. Worth the drive for history buffs.
