“Reviews hold true; a nice little restaurant that offers great value.”
Reviewed April 16, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from the restaurant and was very impressed. In a land of seemingly endless "seafood" houses in the Low Country, this "off the beaten" path establishment was a nice find. The reviews which led me to dine here tonight were entirely correct. The seafood gumbo was loaded with, well, seafood: scallops, crab, shrimp swimming in a mildly spiced sauce. The crab cake was more crab than breading. The only suggestion would be that the cake be served with a sauce, perhaps a dill-based cream sauce. The squid was tender and succulent; obviously it was fresh.
My suggestion would be that management offer draught beer in addition to its bottled offering. If I were in the neighborhood, I would return.

“Fresh Haddock”
Reviewed April 12, 2013 via mobile

Best fresh haddock I have ever eaten. Too few sides to choose from. Obviously your there for the haddock- period. Worth it! Days open and hours open are not posted on door neither is there a phone message to inform you. Closed on Sunday. Full bar when open. I go here when I am in the area.

“Never a bad meal”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

I am a "part-time" local, originally from Ohio, and I find it hard to believe that anyone could have a negative comment about Captain John Venutti"s restaurant in Pawleys Island. Of course, he prefers to serve haddock as his main fish offering as it is one of the few saltwater fish that can be fried, grilled or baked with equality of texture and taste. And, yes, haddock is brought in from the northern Atlantic Ocean because that is where you will find that species of fish. And believe it or not, most "fresh " crab are not locally caught either. Can you get a bad waitress now and then? Of course, because like many other restaurants in the area, the "help" is transitory- waitresses come and go like the wind. The bottom line is " If you don't like Captain John's, you don't like seafood". If all you want is breaded and deep-fried seafood, go across the street to the Fish House.

“Captain Johns Seafood”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

Great place to eat. Lots of good seafood dishes. One of the few place here that can grill Haddock they way they do up North. The Seafood Platter is GREAT. The owners are from NY (not NYC) so they know how to make good seafood. Definitely recommend this place.

“Don't miss this one!”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

We've driven past Captain John's many times and finally noticed it. Every item we chose--Captain John's grilled haddock (signature dish), lemon butter haddock, crab cake, cole slaw, fries, seasoned rice, and potato salad--were excellent.
