“Almost Perfect!”
Reviewed August 18, 2006

We arrived at the Avista on Sunday July 30th at 1pm after driving straight through 14 1/2 hours. We had requested early arrival for check-in purposes and we were very grateful that our room was ready when we arrived. There is a specific parking/unloading area where baggage carts were provided at no cost-no bell boys to tip! After settling in, the front desk rang our room to confirm that "all was well" which I thougt was a nice touch. We stayed in the north/east tower on the sixth floor in a 3 bedroom corner unit. There were floor to ceiling windows in every bedroom and in the living/dining area. The sun shone in every morning and was a wonderful way to wake up. The rooms were very clean and smelled nicely. We had maid service everyday. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful in every way. We couldn't quite figure out the washer/dryer unit and phoned the front desk about it. They sent up a maintanance man less than 10 minutes later who walked us through the procedure. The washer/dryer units really do take over 3 hours to wash and dry a load, but they really do work properly! While in our kitchen we asked the maintanance man for an extra light bulb since we had one that had burned out and he returned very quickly with another one.

On the downside, our unit was not equipped with a safe. We could rent a safe that was just like the safety deposit boxes at the bank-small and narrow and do not hold much, for a $10 deposit which would be refunded upon return of the key. This safe however was located in the office behind the front desk. It seemed like I was invading someone's privacy and office space everytime I got in the safe to remove my belongings.

Our rooms were also not equipped with any clock radios but the front desk had one sent up to our room to satisfy our needs as well. The kitchen had a very small trash can in it and since we cooked several of our meals in our room, it seemed to overflow quickly. There were no blowdryers in any of the 3 bathrooms that were in our unit.. Thankfully we had packed our own.

One of the hot tubs had cold water in it and one day the repair men were fixing the lights in the hot tub which made me nervous since electricity and water do not mix. I thought this repair could have been tackled before the pools were opened or after hours. There was a bar poolside which would have been nice if it would have opened earlier in the day. Some days they could have used another bartender to help out. The frozen drinks were a hit with the kids.

We drove north a few miles to Calabash, North Carolina to a nice restaurant called the Dockside. We were able to watch the shrimp boats come in with their fresh catch of the day. We also purchased fresh shrimp there at $3.75 a pound!

We have stayed at the Sand Dunes for years and we were very unhappy with our stay there last year. After our visit to the Avista, we will never even think about returning to the Sand Dunes!

The Avisita was a wonderful, relaxing, full service resort and we all really enjoyed our stay. Can't wait to return again.

First time visit to Myrtle Beach for the family (3 boys under 10). Building and room was very nice and well kept. Destination was excellent with more than enough to keep everyone happy. Beach was great and most vacationers were very friendly. The only down side was the combo washer/dryer. The dryer only made the cloths hot and wet. We had to use the hotels community dryer to get our cloths dry. We will be back next year for sure, just not sure we will go there because of the dryer. There were a lot of other choice that are worth examination.

  • Liked — Room view and beach
  • Disliked — the dryer that did not work well
  • Tips/Secrets — pack extra cloths

What a pleasant stay we had at the Avista. We had a 1 bedroom on the 7th floor which was just perfect for our family of 4. It was so clean and fresh smelling. The view was just great overlooking the ocean, the countryside and beach houses. The pools were a little small but I always found chairs and space in the pool. The pools would stay cleaner if people weren't such pigs example: people actually eatinng in the pools and not washing they're feet off coming from the beach. The complaint about the power washer cleaning the pool decks how stupid is that, they're keeping the pooldecks and chairs clean!!! We can't wait to go back and have recommended the Avista all our friends.

  • Liked — The suites and the beach
  • Disliked — the pools could be bigger and cleaner

Please do not waste your money! The pools are filthy and full of sand. When we got home my 3 year old had severe swimmers ear and an ear infection. We stayed on the first floor because of our one and three year old. The staff would pressure wash the pool deck at 6:45 am every morning. It sounded like you were in the middle of a race track. Sleep was not possible, not even in the bathroom with the fan on. There was an electric pressure washer (which is more quiet) at the facility, but engineering would not use that one. So basically we paid $2300.00 dollars for a week to be awakened every morning at the crack of dawn. Does that sound relaxing? I spoke with someone that stayed on the sixth floor and they said they could not sleep through it either. The pools are way too small for the amount of people that stay here. I am not that picky of a person and I am telling you to trust me, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

We visited the Avista the week of July 22. Our visit was very nice. Anyt time you needed any assistance from the front desk or from the maintenance engineers you always received it promptly.

My only complaint was the pools. After a hot day on the beach we decided to take a dip in one of the pools/disgusting we got out and smelled like dirty feet. The pools are just not big enough to accomodate the amount of people staying at the Avista. So that was our first and last trip in the pool.

The beach is really beautiful. For the price of an ocean front I would say it was worth it. We spent a lot of time in their fitness room in the morning which was small but also very nice. Only complaint their restaurant and fitness rooms do not face the ocean/it would have been a nice touch. Highly recommend Duffys seafood which is just a short walk very good food. Don't go to Dick's last resort (restaurant) for all the hoopla not worth the wait.

We were so disapointed with Avista. I will say that the rooms were very nice, once you got passes having to do inventory, so you are not charged for missing items. Also the maid's did not know english at all. We asked for an extra sheet and blanket and got all the beds linens changed instead. They had no idea what was said at any given time for any reason. I cannot stress enough how frustrating it was not to be understood for basic everyday things a maid should know.
The Hot tubs were a joke. Three and not one was worth getting into. The two outside are small, one was not hot at all the other has a leak so bad by night time the water was down to seat level. The one inside is big enough and the only hot one, but the jets don't work --not fun at all. As if this is not bad enough they LOCK the pool area up at 10:00pm, this also means the gates to the beach and the back door into the resort. You have to go all the way around to the front of the resort just to get back in if you want to take a walk on the beach at night. We have stayed at Beach Cove in the past but tried Avista for the room size. We will be going back to Beach Cove in the future.

  • Liked — The rooms were great
  • Disliked — No Hot tubs that worked, early lock down, no english speaking maids, small pool area
  • Tips/Secrets — Yes-- don't go to Avista Resorts

The rooms at this resort are terrific for a family...spacious unit and well laid out. The w/d in our unit was terrible-the kind that was a w/d in one. It took forever to wash and dry clothes. The beach was a quick walk, and nice. The pools were very small and crowded. You could go in and cool off, but that's about it. There were kids activities, but they were poorly organized, and sometimes never occurred. The staff was very good. The only restaurant within walking distance was a pizzza place, so be prepared to get in your car every night if not cooking in.
