Avista Resort
Reviewed July 28, 2006

We Checked into the Avista, and when we got to our room we were quite disappointed to find that due to the Architectural curve of the building and geographics... there is little sunshine exposure except on the beach. You cannot see a sunrise from your room as the complex actually faces in a southerly direction. You see lots of other rooms and that is my main memory...

you would acutally have a better sunshine location if you looked out over the street view, as the curve of the building lends itself to the balconies for those units facing east.

We had a 3 bedroom end room. We originally were in a 2 bedroom but moved so we could get some sun.... but were disapointed to find that it doesn't seem to matter where you are... there is little direct sun to be had. In general... everywhere had a grimy greasy feel, the resort is pooly staffed. The massage is 'swedish massage' which was a problem... we booked there as my older son require a RMT to work on his tendons, so the massage service was of no use.

When we arrived there was a note on the counter which explained the inventory of the suite, and that we would be charged for anything that was missing if we didn't report it immediately.... so the first hour we spend scouring the room and taking inventory WELCOME TO THE AVISTA.... of course there was indeed lots missing... knives, toaster, roasting pan..... so glad that we took the time to do that inventory.

When we moved rooms, the inventory in the new room was complete... but we had to spend another hour going through everything.

Our neighbours son got stuck on the elevator around the 7th floor and it took them over 45 mnutes to get him out of the elevator.

We put our 7 year old son in the shark tooth hunt... and I observed from the balcony... once my husband dropped him off... they just led him to the beach where he sat all by himself.... I could see he was very bored, so I sent my husband back down to rescue him... in the interim I saw him and another boy just leave the sand and head back to the hotel... no one was supervising him. Luckily my husband was there to catch him. They just left, the pool and came back to the room.... no-one ever contacted us with any concern that he was missing.

Poorly run, the staff was generally unhelpful which was surprising for South Carolina, as the locals are usually so cheerful and friendly.

Will definately not go back... we cut our stay short and left to go to Washington DC ( 1/2 way home)... When we checked out.... we noted that we had been charged for our room service... WHICH WE HAD PAID CASH FOR AND THE TIPS HAD BEEN ALTERED.

Beach was nice... crowded but nice. ( again the architectural cuve lends to increasing the capacity of tenants.... therefore the beach is overcrowded for the width of the property)

This is a great place for families. Our one bedroom (2beds) condo was very comfortable and roomy. The ocean view was incredible and the condos were well kept. Search all the discount sites to find this gem and stay here! The one and only disappointment was the sit down restaurant. Skip it and take a short drive to something better for the money. We stayed at Avista because of TripAdvisor and we were glad we did!

We stayed at the Avista for 8 nights. The location is great, with wonderful views. We didn't use the pools but the one time I walked past the area i did pick up a wiff of sewerage... I don't know what that was from... The pools were full of people and lounge chairs. The pools did seem small.

The location of the hotel is faily far north of restaurant row. Maybe a 15 -20 minute run south on the main drag... depending of the traffic which is always congested.

The staff was very nice. We had the three bedroom suites and they were cleaned daily and restocked with fresh towels. The kitchens do have silverware, bowls, bottle openers, pots and pans. Remember to bring paper towels , brillo pad and dish soap if you are not going to use the dishwasher. They supply the dishwasher detergent.

The parking garage is a engineers marvel. Every square inch is used, including passing someone coming down when you are going up.. WOW ! It was tight ! Make sure your auto insurance is up to date.

The elevators worked fine. No long waits. Internet connections were great. Pretty fast speed.

Overall we would come back again. Avista was a great place to stay.

We stayed at the Avista Resort during the week of July 4th, 2006. We were recommended to stay at this resort from our brother-in-law who also accompannied us this time as well. It was great fun for the kids (seven we have between the two of us) and enjoyable for us, the four adults. The facilities were very clean, the place smelled great and most of all was very safe for all of our children. Our day consisted of: waking up getting dressed and going to the pool, spa or lazy river ( there are 9 types of pools: two lazy rivers, three spas, one kiddy pool and three regular pools) having lunch, go back to the beach, wash up and go to this great restaurant called Bonefish Grill on Hwy 17, then play either a round of mini golf or take in one of the many shows that are within a 30 minute driving distance. The best had to have been Le Grande Cirque, the kids loved it! I can tell you this, I have been to Mexico and the Caribbean (five star resorts) numerous times, but the Avista is where my children and us enjoyed it the most. The staff was helpful courteous and knowledgable. I would recommend this place to anyone!
Sincerely
Two families from Toronto, Canada

We stayed in a 3 bedroom oceanfront condo on the second floor July 15-20. Totally awesome, and plenty of room for our kids, ages 18, 17, 11, and 5. The layout was perfect to enable both family time and alone time for us all. The balcony was HUGE, and overlooked the ocean and the pool. Service was fabulous - we had a crab picking one night and the 5 year old got crab all over the floor - one phone call and 5 minutes later, housekeeping was there to vacuum it up! We had a self-induced plumbing problem, and maintenance was there within 5 minutes. Free unlimited internet was nice, and they will give you an ethernet cable for only a ten dollar deposit. I do have to fuss like everyone else about the washer/dryer - we couldn't figure out how to open it once it was done (turn off power, wait 3 full minutes) and it takes forever to do a load of clothes. Kitchen was sparsely appointed (dishes for 8), but it was good enough - had to learn to run the dishwasher after each meal. Room was clean, and housekeeping was good. Beach was close, clean, and warm. We didn't use the pool area too much; as others have noted, it looked pretty full. We went to the IGA up the street, but the Wal-Mart is much cheaper. The parking deck was a godsend - very nice to get into a relatively cool car, especially during the 100-degree heatwave we experienced. As a family who normally rents a beach house with another family, I believe we've been converted - it's so nice to have housekeeping come daily!

We stayed at the Avista the week of the 4th of July and couldn't have been happier with our stay! Our kids had a great time in all of the pools, and we really enjoyed the beach. We stayed in a one-bedroom oceanview on the 15th floor and the view from our balcony and floor to ceiling windows in the living room was incredible. I would recommend these units over the oceanfront one bedrooms- the balcony is much bigger, there is a second balcony off the bedroom, and the views are better. Our unit's bathroom didn't have a pedestal sink like other reviewers have reported; our bathroom had a sink in the counter the entire width of the bathroom, plus a cabinet on either side under the sink- plenty of storage! We have always stayed in a condo while in Myrtle Beach, but after our visit, we will definitely be back. It was nice to have maid service everyday if you wanted it; one day, the maid even did the dishes we had in the sink and ran the dishwasher! Also, everyone at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. I needed to print something from the computer and they allowed me to use the computer in the back office to do this; this was much appreciated! Our kids enjoyed the activities they participated in, and the cookout on the 4th was very nice and worth the money. We have stayed at Baywatch before, and I would definitely recommend the Avista over Baywatch. I would recommend the Avista to anyone without reservations, and we can't wait to go back again!!
