“Awesome room and great amenities, but lousy service”
Reviewed September 1, 2009

Our family stayed at the Avista Resort in August 2009. We were very impressed with all of the amenities this resort has to offer. The 1-BR unit was very spacious and clean. And the oceanfront location was perfect. These positive features, however, were negated by the quality of service at the front desk. Upon checking in, we were served by agent, Manuella Lewis. She did not greet but instantly questioned about the reservation with an arrogant tone. It took her over 15 minutes look up the reservation and finalize the details while a long line was building behind us. When we got to the room, we found out that the agent had incorrectly programmed the keys, so again we had to return to the front desk. While waiting in line, we noticed that the same agent (Manuella) were treating other customers with the same attitude and incompetency she had given us earlier. We were disappointed and approached another agent for assistance.

Overall, we were satisfied with amenities and room comfort of this resort. We only wished that the front desk agents could have been better trained to provide quality service consistent with a 4-star resort.

After doing extensive research on where to stay in N. Myrtle (it was between the Avista, Towers on the Grove and Prince Resort) I got a great deal on a 2 bdrm oceanfront and decided to book at the Avista.
Upon arrival we checked in a bit early with no problems and we were very impressed with our spacious and well apointed condo on the third floor. The views were great!!!
I loved the fact that even though it was a condo and stocked w/ a full kitchen there was daily maid service.
The pools were great. Yes they were crowded, but what else would you expect? Everyone we met was very friendly and just happy to be on vacation. The only problem was that the pools were treated w/ salt-based chlorine which really did a number on your eyes.
The pool grill was really convenient, although the prices were very reasonable we usually brought our own drinks down to the pool in a cooler and went up for lunch.

Regarding saving seats at the pool- of course people came down early and saved seats, we travel all over the caribbean and the US and it happens everywhere. It's silly for people to complain about this- what can they really do about it? I found that if you got down to the pool by 10-11 you would have no problems getting a chair.

As others have mentioned it was a bit annoying that the parking garage was across the street (especially when you are driving a Yukon- yikes) but all the big resorts have this and it's just a minor inconvenience.

We did not eat at any of the hotel restaurants so I can't comment on that but I can say that we looked over the room service menu and the prices are also very reasonable ($8 for a burger)

Feel free to email me w/ any questions

Overall we had a GREAT time! We were very happy with the staff, the location and the resort in general. We will most definitely be back!!!!!!

This was our 2nd year in a row staying at The Avista and we loved it again. The beach is awesome, the pools and lazy rivers were a big hit with my kids again (6 & 4 years old) and the room was perfect. We changed rooms midway through our 6-night stay due to a reservation mix-up but the issue was resolved and was a win-win for us and for the Avista. Staff were extremely helpful when we needed them. I noticed some reviews state the pools were dirty and the pool decks were unkept - that is total BS. I can tell you that the Avista has at least one dedicated pool worker working throughout the day and evening keeping everything neat and tidy. Of course you're going to get sand in the pools and lazy rivers but that is not the Avista's fault - it is the fault of the disrespectful people who come straight from the beach and into the pools and lazy rivers without rinsing off first. The Main St. corner is actuallt pretty neat now especially with the OD Pavilion now open. I will be back in August 2010 for a 3rd straight year which will officially make The Avista Resort a family summer vacation tradition.

We stayed at Avista week of Aug.22 and really enjoyed it.
Me ,wife and, 3yr old usually stay in MB, but decided to stay in North MB and GLAD we did.
First the rate we got threw the hotel website was a great last min. deal.
At checkin we were greeted by a great and friendly staff also got our room hours early too, which was a plus.
The room was a ocean front 1 bdr. It was clean and nice space with seperate bedroom.
I had requested mid-level and recieved 12 floor, perfect view of the ocean.
Last was the pools sad to say they were not good ,compared to other hotels in MB
The 2 small outdoor pools were dirty and crowded and the lazy river had signs of mold and alot of sand in them.
After all that they are ocean front and you should expect some sand and wear and tear so not a huge problem. The location and beach front are perfect....for everyone in the family, so a great stay we had...

I agree with some of the postings. This resort is very nice and it had all we wanted in the resort or within walking distance. As far as cleanliness, I think it depends on the housekeeper that cleans your place. We showed up two hours before check in time and we said our room was ready. Everything looked nice and clean, but it was superficial. The first thing I did was to check the beds and found them stained. Through the pillow case I saw blood stains, the blanket had hairs, the kitchen floor was not swept well and some of the walls had dirty spots in the livingroom, bathroom and kitchen. I call the front desk, the head of housekeeping came to check and had othere housekeeper come to change everything. The housekeeper who had done our room was reprimanded, we were new sheets, blanket, bedcover, and newly bought pillows. The head of housekeeping also was the dishes herselft again . They were promp to adress the problem and that made me feel a lot better. Everything else about the AVISTA was fine. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CHECK EVERYTHING WHEN YOU FIRTS GET THERE!!!
Among our favorites was the lazy river and ocean front.

This was our 5th stay at Avista and our last. We requested a full size crib for our son, and was told by phone when we made the reservation that yes they had them, we even called again to confirm it we were told yes again. When we arrived there was no crib in our room waiting for us, we had to call and ask. A portable crib was brought to us, this is NOT a full size crib like we requested and were told they had, it is the same as a pack n play, which our son will not sleep in. The portable crib was dirty and not in good condition, I would not put a dog in it let alone my child. They told us that was all they had, NO full size crib. They also said that their policy was first come first serve for whatever cribs are available. So if I made a reservation and requested a crib they may or may not have one. This should be changed so that if you reserve a room and request a crib it should also be reserved. We spent our first day buying a crib and putting it together. The end result is that they did not try to resolve this issue in a timely manner and were indifferent to their mistake. If they had said that they had no full size cribs when I asked them 2 times about it during the reservation process then I would not have made a reservation with them and would have gone somewhere else. We are still waiting on the general manager of the hotel to call back to try to get some kind of resolution for loosing a day of our vacation.

We also had to change rooms, because our room did not have a safe, we have always had a safe in the room(everytime we have stayed here) they told us not all rooms do. Be careful if you want to stay here. Be sure to ask and get confirmation that the room you want has all the things you would expect it to have. To us a room safe is a basic requirement if you are traveling with anything of value.

This used to be a great place to stay, especially for families. Not anymore. Dirty pools, smoking in the pool areas, disinterested management. We'll be staying elsewhere in the future.
