The pier and the beach is beautiful. You will not find the large crowds that are generally seen at the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, but this does not take away from the total experience. I loved the quietness you will experience at this beach and pier.

Being new to the ocean experience, I naively thought this was JUST a historic pier. We were very disappointed to find that a fee was charged just to walk out onto the pier but we decided to bite that bullet just for the experience. I very quickly regretted that decision as we started out the pier and discovered that it's primary use seems to be for fishing. I can't stand sport fishing whereby the poor creatures are basically tortured before being thrown back in to repeat the process...if they survive their injuries. I'm okay with fishing, however, if it's for the purpose of eating the meat. I saw a couple of fish cleaning stations so I reined in my initial revulsion...a bit hastily...and continued walking to the end of the pier. There was a sign prohibiting fishing for sharks but the first sea creature that I saw reeled in was...you guessed it...a small shark. The poor thing had it's throat ripped to shreds in the hook removal process. The bleeding shark was tossed back in the ocean to surely die in agony. I turned from that area to discover a small manta ray dangling from a line off the side of the pier. The poor thing was flapping it's wings in a futile attempt to get back to the water below. After hanging there for what seemed an eternity the fisherman finally landed it on the planks of the pier so his friends could gather round to gawk at the struggling ray. They waited for it to flop over to get the right "photo opportunity" before beginning the digging process to remove the embedded hook. Yes, it was eventually thrown back in...but it is very unlikely that it survived for very long. There were a few responsible fishermen who were using the tables to clean their catch but I was thoroughly disgusted at this point and couldn't get off that pier fast enough. Inflicting cruelty on an innocent creature for the pure selfish enjoyment of viewing it, or simply the satisfaction of the "catch", is despicable. The only positive thing about the whole experience was the view of the shoreline from the end of the pier. But even that was dimmed by the realization that the entry fee was undoubtedly contributing, in some way, to the cruelty. Never again!!!

We came down for the weekend and had never pier fished before. Everyone was very helpful. Reasonable price to rent equipment. Caught 4 fish. Definitely will be back.

The beach was really clean and they beach goers were friendly. The parking was scarce, but the beach is worth driving around to look for parking.
