Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Hunley became the world's first successful combat submarine in 1864 with the sinking of the USS Housatonic. After making world history, she mysteriously vanished. Lost at sea for over a century, she was finally found in 1995 and then raised from the ocean floor in 2000. Since then, scientists have been at work to conserve the legendary submarine and solve the mystery of her disappearance. Tours of the Hunley include viewing the Hunley in her 75,000 conservation tank, facial reconstructions of the crew, and interactive exhibits that tell the submarine's fascinating tale throughout the centuries.

If you are ever in Charleston visit the Hunley $12.00 per person... If you don't want to spend the 12 bucks you can still go in the lobby and check out the pre tour and the gift shop, but I am sure you want to see the real thing. Check out the movie the Hunley before you go it will make you want to see it more...

This was everything I wanted it to be. You have about 20 minutes looking at the Hunley, then you move on to another place & hear more about the soldiers and the ship. Actual recovered artifacts are on display. It's only open to the public on the weekend, they are restoring it during the week. Clean bathrooms are in the gift shop. Everyone was so knowledgeable about the ship & its occupants, you feel like you know them by the time you leave.

Stopped by here on our way in to Charleston and it is only open to visitor's on the weekends. It was great. We walked though a small museum and there was a nice gift shop and then we had a 45 minute guided tour and got to actually see the Hunley. Very nice thing to see.

This attraction was very interesting and affordable. Being inside, it was a nice attraction to attend to get out of the August heat.
The location is down a deserted road, in fact, we turned around once thinking we had missed the correct turn. But returned again and followed our GPS, which took us directly to the site.
There is a replica of the submarine, which allows all ages to sit in to get the affects of the size of this submarine.
Well worth the time and cost.

great tour. great guide. great interpretations and presentations. amazing that a 150 year old vessel had concepts that were used in ww1 and 2 such as ballast tanks, snorkels, diving planes. a ship that changed warfare. a bit of civil war that may have been forgotten if not found [thanks to clive cussler]. looking forward to its complete restoration and preservation in its new future home.
