Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Hunley became the world's first successful combat submarine in 1864 with the sinking of the USS Housatonic. After making world history, she mysteriously vanished. Lost at sea for over a century, she was finally found in 1995 and then raised from the ocean floor in 2000. Since then, scientists have been at work to conserve the legendary submarine and solve the mystery of her disappearance. Tours of the Hunley include viewing the Hunley in her 75,000 conservation tank, facial reconstructions of the crew, and interactive exhibits that tell the submarine's fascinating tale throughout the centuries.

Best tour/museum in the Charleston area! Make sure you ask what tour BILL is leading....best presenter/guide I've listened to in years. 1 hour tour went by like that.....actually wanted to make sure you got to ask questions and stuff other guides wont share! Thank you for your amazing presentation!

For a great view into a personal history lesson this is the way to go! Wow...the presentation of the historical material associated with this little piece of history is just awe inspiring! The way that the material is presented makes one feel a personal connection to the brave souls that gave the ultimate sacrifice for the pursuit of freedom that we all enjoy today! Bravo!!!! It moved me to tears. This is a must see when coming into the area for the young and old. Don't miss this!

On a rainy day, we visited the Hunley Submarine Museum. The paid tour was a must to understand the history of the Hunley. The guide was knowledgeable and very entertaining.

The history on this Civil War submarine is fasinating and still unraveling. Just recently they have found clues as to why the vessel sank.

Hidden away in the old navy base in North Charleston the Hunley exhibition is well worth finding. Not just the fascinating old submarine and its story but the many Civil War artifacts. All linked together and well told by our guide Bill. Thank you.
