Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Hunley became the world's first successful combat submarine in 1864 with the sinking of the USS Housatonic. After making world history, she mysteriously vanished. Lost at sea for over a century, she was finally found in 1995 and then raised from the ocean floor in 2000. Since then, scientists have been at work to conserve the legendary submarine and solve the mystery of her disappearance. Tours of the Hunley include viewing the Hunley in her 75,000 conservation tank, facial reconstructions of the crew, and interactive exhibits that tell the submarine's fascinating tale throughout the centuries.

“great for history and science fans”
Reviewed November 8, 2011

My husband is a Hunley descendant, so we got a special tour which included a look at the various artifacts found inside the sub, like the captains gold watch. Couldn't really see the sub, cause it is still under water and covered with a bunch of steel support thingies, but the tour guides were obviously experts in their fields.

“A Worthwhile Experience but Don't Expect Too Much!”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

This is an interesting experience but if you expect to have time to gaze and study this historic sub you will be disappointed. It is, at the present time, hard to see the actual sub under water in the tank as it is surrounded by the support mechanisms. The tour we were given, in this area, was informative but short. However, there are displays and exhibits that are separated from the Hunley viewing area and you have unlimited time to wander through that section. After spending time here you will come away with a new appreciation of the heroism and sacrifice of the men of the Huunley crews. The staff will gladly give you directions to nearby Magnolia Cemetery where the remains of these men are interred.

“Most Interesting look at a Confederate Sub”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

Although this was a little away from downtown Charleston, the trip was worth it. Since the sub has only been uncovered in the past ten years, the scientists continues its archeological work. The sub is protected under fresh water, and is viewed from above. The guide was knowledgeable and humorous. Written material was nicely presented. You can also view a movie made about the Hunley before or after the brief 20 minute tour. Don't miss the famous gold coin of Lt Dixon's, the Captain of the Sub who perished with his crew. Nice to see a site that continues its scientific work.

“Senior Adult visit”
Reviewed October 21, 2011

This is a great place to visit. The tours are given by retired Navy men who are very passionate about submarines and the stories surrounding the Hunley. They have real artifacts on display from the Hunley
