Westgate Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort
Ranked #74 of 209 Hotels in Myrtle Beach
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Traded into the last week of 2013. First time at a Westgate property. Have stayed in many Marriotts, including the Dunes location in MB, so that is where by bias comes from. Had limited contact with staff so no comments about them. Will break down my review starting out with the good and ending with the bad (and/or needs improvement).

The goods:
Location - Right on beach. Next to a small theme park (which was closed for the winter). Walking distance to a few restaurants and a CVS. Not far from airport. Easy to get to main roads to take you to more restaurants, shopping, and attractions. Ample sized parking lot (seems like they will be adding a ramp as only the ground level was available for covered parking).
Room - 1 bedroom suite was very spacious. Had separate 2 person jacuzzi tub in the bedroom (kinda akward). Separate and very spacious shower with 2 heads (both cannot operate at same time at full pressure though). Good working kitchen with pots, pans, bakingware, and dinnerware. Didn't use the sleeper but it was there. Had two wall mounted flat screens with dvd players. Balcony had patio furniture. Had stacking W/D.
Pools - they were heated and the hot tub was always hot.

The Bads:
Pools - No indoor pools. Everything is outside.
WiFi - NO free wifi. They charge $39.99 for the week and that is for 1 device at a time only! You will get an error message telling you about 1 device only, if you try to log onto a different device. Its quirky as well. Even after logging off and completely powering off the 1st device connected to wifi, you still have to wait like 30 minutes to an hour for the system to reset itself and be able to use it on another device. Super annoying and inconvenient!!!
Kitchenware - No tongs so if you plan to cook, you should pick up one on your grocery run.
Laundry - May not apply to you but if you are picky with laundry detergent, then bring your own or go buy it because all they provide are generic powder packs. The washing machine takes forever to finish so plan accordingly. The cycles run 70-90 minutes. Dryer is loud. I'm still happy that these
Business Center - There's 2 computers in the main lobby for use by guests. However, they require payment for printing ($.80/page). The room card swipe did not work and therefore no printing was available. The front desk said they do not provide or are responsible for those computers so you're better off finding a public library or FedEx Kinkos for any printing needs.
Parking - It rained several days. The covered parking (in the unfinished ramp) has no grading at all. It was puddle filled, so be prepared to have wet shoes/feet if you parked there.

No one from Westgate had done a follow-up on our stay, but were surveyed by an independent agency with no room for comments on their questionnaire. We stayed at Xmas time.
We stayed Xmas week.

A year ago my wife and I upgraded our Westgate membership following a 'hard sell'.
Be prepared/armed for a 'HARD sell'. We upgraded to a one bedroom grand in 2012 and subsequently to a 2-bedroom grand in 2013. Their people went away- until our last visit in late December. Leave us alone - all of you. Commercialism run rampant at Westgate!
1st stay in 2012- 17th floor of north tower. Great view, room and staff. I suspect the majority of 'great' reviews come from 1st timers staying on the 17th floor having an ocean view.

2nd stay -We did not use our timeshare. Rather, we paid for the room on a daily basis. Upon arrival after a 210 mile drive, my wife discovered that she was mislead by the front desk while reserving a 4-day stay several days earlier. Note: as she has run a law office and real estate firm for a total of 31 years, I suspect that she has excellent communication skills.
Results-In lieu of an upper floor in the north tower, we were forced to accept the 3rd floor.
Tough break, but not as tough as the stay in the room.

While my initial 3 complaints to the front desk were promptly resolved within an hour by friendly employees I later found I missed a few items. See below--

The main room (sofa, kitchen,TV) had 2 of the 3 lights burned out in the ceiling fan. FIXED.
The bathroom's tiled floor was 'tacky'. FIXED.
The bedroom dresser was tipped forward causing drawers to constantly glide open. FIXED.
WHAT WE CHOOSE TO LIVE WITH--
The bathroom sink does NOT hold water.
The patio sliding door to balcony needs @ 40 pounds of pull to open and close. Ridiculous.
The TV in the main room has a defective speaker - distorts sound.
The tile at the kitchen sink too was 'tacky'.
Bedroom armoire --2 of the 4 hinges on left leaf unattached and dresser severely leaning!
The hotel's web browser (which you need to use during the stay) is corrupted/dirty. Plan on cleaning your computer while you are visiting, and after you leave!
The unit has no coffee mugs - just small glass 'containers'.
No pen or pencil or paper pad in the unit.
The walls between units transmit sound well if you want to know more about your neighbors. The adjacent visitors with the pre-teen kid next door were 'over the top' loud - they only had one level to communicating with their deaf child.
Around 1PM they all quieted down or killed each other every night - we left after 4 days. Kind of like grandchildren. You can leave 'em behind. Problem solved!
The bedroom 'black-out' curtains are not 'black out', but they work okay..
On the plus side I can think of 4 things-- the bar in the check-in lobby was very pleasant,
the gym room too, the 2 elevators for 17 floors very efficient, and the staff very helpful!

You too will think that Westgate-Myrtle Beach is a great place --if you get a stay on the 17th floor of the north tower with an ocean view.
But, unless they are trying to sell you an upgrade, don't count on it!
SUMMARY: was a lot happier leaving than arriving!

Room Tip: I recommend 17th floor of the north tower with the ocean view. There goes my room. Book way in adv...

My friends and I stayed here for 4 days in December. The resort was very clean, and our room was comfortable and well-kept by the staff. I would, however, avoid the buffet breakfast. Even though it was $8 per person, the quality and the variety of foods were disappointing. I'd recommend the nearby IHOP or someplace else for breakfast.

As for the value of the resort, on the other than, it was definitely a bargain. Because it was December, we paid only $150 total for 2 double beds for 3 nights (look for an extra 15% off coupon somewhere online). I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone - family, friends or couples - who's thinking of spending some time at Myrtle Beach. As a plus, the beach is literally a stone's throw away from the hotel. Just exit the resort, turn left, walk 10 meters, and the beach will be right before your eyes.

Room Tip: Try to get the rooms that face the beach.

Hotel welcomed me with open arms. Met with great customer service from the moment I arrived. Nyteli at the front desk was great. I almost feel guilty for not bringing the kids. But I will be coming back and bringing them next time. My room and view, just perfect.

I have a Westgate time share in Orlando. I had to hurry up and use a week that was almost expiring. I was finally able to get into the MBeach resort. Love my view. My child and I have never gone to the beach in the winter so this is gonna be a heck of 7 days. Usually, she stays in water but now we have to visit the sites/attractions of the town. I am enjoying my stay (even though this is my first nightj). Will let you know at the end of trip if still good.
