First and foremost, a vacation is what you make of it. Despite "the bad" noted below, we had a fabulous vacation. Met amazing people poolside and at Buckets. Had plenty of laughs, lots of sun and overall a great experience in Myrtle Beach. Would definitely return to the Myrtle Beach area for a vacation.

The Good:

Location: Across the road from the beach, close to public playground and exercise trail. Within walking distance to assorted shops and restaurants.

Our Room: We had booked a three-bedroom unit and were thrilled with Room 1602. This unit is amazing. Clean, modern, tastefully decorated and loaded with all the amenities. The views were spectacular. We had daily room service including fresh towels daily and garbages emptied. The owners telephoned to ensure all was well with the unit and wished us a happy vacation. Such a nice touch!

The People: We met the owners of the Bucket Grill, who really made you feel at home. The manager, Doug, always had a pleasant greeting. The cleaning staff, (sorry I forgot her name), was pleasant and efficient.

The Bad: Unfortunately, the building is undergoing renovations. While a necessary evil, the result was the fact that the outdoor pool was closed, Buckets' outdoor patio was closed and there was a lot of noise poolside. Also there was an excessive amount of styrofoam bits in the lazy river and hot tub which we also attributed to the construction.

The rooms or condo units are individually owned and therefore there appears to be no quality control in the condition of the units. We had an opportunity to view another unit on a different floor and found it less than appealing. It was poorly decorated, had old appliances and few amenities. (Thankfully, our unit had loads of dishes, cutlery, glasses, etc.). The units seem to make or break this resort. It's easier to put up with construction and other inconveniences when you have an awesome condo unit.

Also, if you are afraid of heights, beware this building. The walkway to your condo is an exterior, open air walkway with a chest-high "airy" railing. Caused a bit of nervousness to one of our travellers.

Bottom line, we felt we had good value for the money spent. Would love to return to Forest Dunes but only when the renovations are complete and only if unit 1602 or an equivalent was available.

Room Tip: Loved unit 1602; loathed unit 1402

Management response:Responded June 21, 2012

We're delighted you were pleased with unit 1602. It's true that not all condos are the same, but you can usually find photos on Facebook and a number of the booking sites. Most of our owners use their units themselves and keep them the way we all like to find things when we travel. And, it really helps us when guests identify both things they've enjoyed or unfortunately did not like in particular units.

You are also right about our condos on higher floors not being good choices for those with a touch of acrophobia. But the open air walkways are what allows our condos to have spectacular views from all the living areas in the higher units. It just doesn't work for those who don't do well with heights.

And, of course, we are so pleased our winter construction project finally came to an end. Work has to be done sometime, but it's no fun for anyone.

So thanks for sharing your excellent observations and we look forward to your return visit.

This was our second stay. We were very well pleased with everything. Couldn't have been a better vacation. The hotel is being remodeled(almost finished I think). Looks great. Each condo is owned separately and state of repair may differ..

I would like to say first of all after reading these reviews that forest dunes is not a hotel, they are condos. Each condo is owned by someone and they are the ones who decorate it..All the units are different. Now with that said-we just left on wednesday and although we were told that there was construction and the oceanfront rooms were not available-we had no idea what we were getting into.We called at 11:45 pm on sunday after the house we had planned to stay in was infested with water bugs.We drove an additional 45 min to get to forest dunes. The lady on the phone was very helpful and told us the that guard would have our keys. When we arrived the guard gave us our things and made it very clear that there was no smoking on the property. We unloaded and hit the bed..The next day we were awoke by jackhammers in the room next door--Thats right we were put directly beside the construction that began at 8am.The pool was covered in plywood and our balcony was blocked by scaffles-we could not use the balcony due to debris flying around-We even came back one night and all the furniture was rearranged. The next morning was the same alarm clock-8am jackhammer and the next.We talked to the manager who gave use a discount.Although our condo was not the best as we have stayed before and the condo was fabulous-We will stay again-maybe-we would have asked for a few nights in august but feared that management would change before then since they have just switched hands.

Room Tip: again all the rooms are different-you can stay in each one and no two are the same.its the luck of the draw with condos..we have even stayed in one with a king size water bed...

We are currently spending our last day at the Forest Dunes. We will never return. When we arrived, we found construction going on, scaffolding covering our ocean-front room, and we were unable to even open the doors to the deck. After a few hours, all the electricity in our 9th floor room went out except for the kitchen lights and we were forced to move to a different room at 9pm. The new room was, at least, cleaner. NO ONE advised us that construction was going on. NO ONE told us that we would hear the noise of jackhammers all day long if we were near the place during the day. As Geraldine P said, the man at the desk said we should have received an email, but we did not. Currently, our patio door does not lock. We have to place a metal chair in the slot to keep the door locked. The pool is covered in plywood. We had to beg to get maid service. The coffee pot had burned on coffee on its burner and it was so bad we had to request a new one. The TV remote isn't the same brand as the TV, so it doesn't work. I will say that the manager was very nice and did give us a break on the rate, but nothing can make up for all the trouble we have had. The weather has been very cool, which doesn't bother us because we are avid readers and don't mind staying inside. However, the sounds of constant drilling and hammering are unbelievable. We can't sit on the patio due to the dust created by the construction. We never should have stayed here but we had already made a deposit and the man at the desk told us "There is nowhere else." However, after riding around, we saw that most every hotel has vacancies. I would not recommend this place to my friends even after the construction is finished. Why? Because the management does not have the integrity to tell you ahead of time that you should expect construction, noise, and disappointment.

I booked my reservation for an ocean front room on the internet. I got a confirmation number and thought everything was fine. When I arrived, there was scaffolding along the front of the building. When I went to check in, the lady behind the counter said that management was supposed to have called and let us know that the ocean front rooms were under construction. I never received a call. My huband and I checked the room. The balcony was completely torn up (drywall leaning against the patio door); construction workers yelling (and obviously things were not going well by the number of curse words we heard) as well as loud banging and alarms from the hoist being used. The management did offer us a discount off the room so we decided to stay. At night time, it was ok. During the day, I had to stay out of the room or I would have had an Excedrin headache for sure.

If you have plans in March or April to go to this hotel, please call them first so you won't be disappointed. It is evident that they will not call you.

Haven't decided yet if I will return to Forest Dunes.
