“The Mariner Building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013

My family and I stayed at the Mariner Building and i must say that it was really nice. We were on the 9th floor with a nice ocean view and loved it. The kitchen and living/dining area was a little small for a group of seven but even that wasn't nothing to complain about. The breakfast buffet was great and very convenient so i highly recommend including breakfast when booking to stay here. I was skeptical about staying here at first due to the reviews but we had a nice clean condo and may come back to visit this resort next year. The only con i have about this resort is that the lazy river is small but other than that we had a great time.

We had a wonderful time at Compass Cove. For a hotel as big as it is I was amazed at how clean the entire property was. The grounds were beautiful and the pool areas were always kept clean. We reserved a 3 bedroom condo and it was well equipped and very spacious. We enjoyed the entertainment at the tiki hut each day as well as the voodoo juice buckets. We are already planning our trip for next summer. After staying at other hotels in the past, I can finally say we found our vacation spot at Compass Cove. I would highly recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Stay on a higher floor for the best views.

I know Compass Cove has 3 buildings, and my family and I stayed at the bargain building... so maybe the higher priced rooms are better - but the bargain building was gross - I would never go back or recommend anyone to go there. We got the cheapest 2 bedroom suite available - but it was still $179 a nite + tax. We were trying to find a bargain place for a family on the beach. Maybe that is impossible.

It is billed as a hotel, but the rooms in our building were motel style - opening to the outside. Our room faced the parking garage. There are a lot of neat pools for the kids which is why I chose it - but the volume of people was so great that the pool water seemed unclean. We got a 1st floor room - which was nice bc we had a balcony that opened directly on the pool deck, but at the same time, it was very loud at nite when we wanted to sleep and everyone else was still up at the pool.

The best part of the place was the kitchen, it had a full fridge, stove and microwave and was mostly stocked with dinnerware, cookware, etc. The bedrooms were small and very dirty - VERY DIRTY! I did not want the kids to even sit on the floor.

We are at Disney now, during the same trip and we have a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 floor suite that is very spacious and clean and HALF the price of what we paid for Compass Cove.

I will never go back and do not recommend anyone else to stay there.

After paying extra to book an oceanfront room, it would have been nice to actually see the ocean instead of looking out my window and straight out at the pool and all the guests peeping back at me and my family. We couldn't even leave the blinds open without feeling like our privacy was being invaded. A ground level room that looks into the pool area should come at a reduced rate. Bathroom issues included brown spots on the ceiling, a tub that barely drained and a spider big enough that it could have eaten my 2 year old. For the price paid for our stay, we definitely expected a better room experience. I have stayed at much nicer hotels in Myrtle Beach for the same price and will stay at nicer hotels in the future.

Checked in on a Sunday and the line was huge. It was wrapped around the office outdoors. There was someone giving out chips and water, but after taking about 45 minutes to even make it up to the door, it was going to take more than that to make up for it. The room was typical for myrtle beach. Nothing fancy but it was clean. Housekeeping staff was very nice but it did take them a while to get to our room. Other places I've stayed our room has been done by 12. At this hotel it can take until later in the afternoon. Pool bar was great. We did eat breakfast at the hotel and it was good. The DVD rental was nice as well. Parking was easy as it was a walk across the street. I was never lucky enough to find one at the adjacent parking garage.Just watch out for the check in process. Also, the resort could spring for the individual packs of coffee for your room. As much as the rooms are, I feel sure they could spring for those and it wouldn't put much of a dent in their profits. They do sell it in baggies in the gift store for a ridiculous price.

After a 14 hour drive, the last thing I needed was a problem with the room.I was traveling with my wife and another couple. The first room was #235 which had mold on the ceiling in 1 bedroom and the ceiling in the bathroom. Went to the desk and they apologized and put me in room #238 which had even more mold than the first room!! I was ready to walk out and find another hotel but the manager accommodated me by offering a 3 brm. condo which was very nice. Overall the hotel was very nice and the employees very nice but mold is something that needs to be taken seriously, even though they told me they are closing the rooms with the mold. The towel game was being played by the pool @ 6am. The beach is nice but the lifeguards/Chair/ Umbrella guys block the whole front row of the beach not letting people with there own chairs and umbrellas sit in the front, they have to set up their umbrella behind them or you could sit in front without your umbrella.

My husband and I stayed at Compass Cove after deciding to go to Myrtle Beach spontaneously. We were told we would get a king oceanview efficiency (side view of the ocean), but upon arrival we were pleased to get an oceanfront room (front view of the ocean). I do want to make a note about the resort's website. When you view the room layout for an efficiency, it shows a separate kitchen in the diagram. The efficiency rooms just have a small kitchenette beside the bed. That was not a problem for us (we only stayed one night), but it could be a potential problem to some, so I would suggest that error be fixed on the website.

Our room wasn't ready upon arrival, but we were given a key to get around the property so we could use the facilities until our room is ready. We walked around the property for a short while. There is plenty of space for guests to spread out with several pools, lounging areas and a large beach area. The pool water was a little murky, but that is to be expected considering that children probably jump from the ocean to the pool without properly cleaning themselves. Many have commented on the overwhelming amount of children at the resort. To us, the resort was so spread out that the amount of children really didn't seem noticeable. Navigating around the resort was somewhat troublesome, though. In our building, the staircases were confusing. Instead of one big stair area that went to every floor, the stair areas were disjointed. To get to the third floor parking lot, for example, you had to go to the second floor and take an outside stair area up to the third floor of parking, instead of just walking over from the third floor. It's a minor issue at best, but still something you have to figure out as a first-time guest. Our room was ready around 2:30, so it was ready before the official check-in time.

Our room was pretty spacious and clean. Some parts of the bathroom could stand a little extra scrubbing, but it was still clean and everything looked very well kept up. Sleeping that night wasn't simple, because the sheet kept popping off the mattress every time we moved. The floor around the air conditioner was wet. It wasn't really a problem; we just stepped over it. We told the woman at the front desk about it when we checked out. Our view of the ocean was beautiful. We were on the fourth floor of the Pinnacle Building, right above the outside seating for a restaurant so our balcony wasn't private. I would highly suggest requesting a high floor. We requested a high floor, but being that it was a last-minute booking, we didn't expect a high floor. Sound wasn't really an issue, though, and that was all that mattered to us. The outside area became quiet at an appropriate time.

The high point for us about the hotel was the price of the hotel (we got a much better deal there for what you get than anywhere else) and there are a lot of discounts available through the hotel that we took advantage of. During the summertime, they also offered free movie rentals. Since we only stayed one night, we didn't take advantage of that. We didn't eat there, but the restaurants seemed good. A complimentary breakfast option would have been nice. I would stay here again; the only thing holding me back from it is the sheet popping off the bed. As silly as that sounds, good sleep is an important factor to us while on vacation. Either way, it was still a good hotel and we enjoyed our stay.
