Trip reviews are helpful; however, we always read them carefully and scrutinize with skepticism. We often wonder if some individuals chose the correct hotel they are critiquing, or have travel experience (or lack of), affecting their perception and expectations.
As noted in our other reviews, “resorts” at many east coast beaches typically translate into multiple buildings, tight parking accommodations, activities that are mostly money vacuums. They are not quite the same caliber of “resort” found in more "exotic" locations (i.e Cozumel, Caribbean, Hawaii). And, we understand negative reviews for some of the lodging at these “resorts” -- these facilities handle high volumes so they are used and abused.
Overall we had a wonderful experience at Sandy Beach and had only a couple minor complaints.
-Comfortable beds, quiet accommodations
-Ample towels (Towels are counted but we had an ample supply. Inventory is reasonable given ‘loss’ and/or improper use [they are not meant to be used as beach towels]).
-Good housekeeping (Staff performed job well).
-Friendly, accommodating, helpful staff
-High speed elevators that ran efficiently (minimal, not exhaustive wait time)
-Ample parking (two lots are situated across the street but you do not cross a busy highway. It’s a two-lane street with crosswalks and traffic lights near intersection for safe crossing).
-Within walking distance to many activities, stores, shops (did not find hotel location to be a convenient walking distance for groceries but Food Lion is a close drive and there are several options just before entering Myrtle Beach (i.e. Walmart, mall areas).
-Not so sure security is as good as some reviewers write. We had no issues but presence of security personnel was scarce and hotel was easily accessible to anyone.
-Loading and unloading can be chaotic (you pull below building which is crammed and busy with vehicle and foot traffic).
-We witnessed that many hotel guests were inconsiderate with timely return of luggage carts.
-Lazy river is small and hotel guests are inconsiderate with use of tubes. Seems management needs to invest in a few more tubes and police area. Guests were seen taking tubes into ocean but lifeguard quickly reprimanded and removed them from beach.
-Glass and smoking are not permitted in pool areas. Yet we found many hotel guests drinking alcohol from all types of containers including glass. Smokers were puffing away.
-Pools could be cleaner. We did see a couple cigarette butts floating in kiddie pool – YUCK!
-We agree with other traveler reviews that people reserve the beach loungers in pool area for extended periods of time and do not return for hours.
-Water pressure in showers was low.
Ugly (doesn't reflect on hotel)
SHAME on the City of Myrtle Beach. Beaches were not very clean (until high tide\ when Mother nature came in to sweep garbage off the beach-sadly that trash goes into the ocean). Beaches were abundant in trash including cigarette butts, plastic ware, bottles and food wrappers. We wonder why the beaches are not better maintained and why travelers are so ignorant that they find it so difficult to use a trash can.
We agree with another reviewer who stated lifeguards did not seem very conscientious. We saw a couple resting their eyes and taking interest in young bikini-clad girls.
There are some travelers who come with the thought that they are on vacation and that gives them the right to act foolishly, break rules, ruin property. This has been witnessed not only in Myrtle Beach but other vacation destinations. And, this may be our only complaint with Sandy Beach Resort. Staff could be more proactive at enforcing a few of the simple rules so that all can enjoy their stay.
Overall, our accommodations were awesome and we had a nice time.
