Sun N Sand Resort
Ranked #105 of 207 Hotels in Myrtle Beach
Reviewed June 12, 2011

We just got back from Myrtle Beach yesterday and I am aready planning my next trip using this hotel.
PROS: it was clean and the staff was friendly. I am glad I didnt read the prior reviews or I would have missed a good deal on a hotel that is steps from the beach. it's not the Ritz but it is at the south end of Ocean drive so you dont get the crowds farther up. Covered parking so your car isnt sitting in the heat. the room was clean and a reasonable size and the floor was not nasty. Our view was beautiful. the bathroom was spotless. Check in and check out was seamless.

CONS: there is only one elevator that services the parking garage so sometimes there is a bit of a wait to get to your car. I would suggest loading and unloading your car at the front door if it is too busy. and the price of the chairs and umbrellas on the beach. $30 for the day to me is too much money. Bring your own.

The check-in time was 4 pm, which is later than most hotels. We didn't get keys to our room until 5:40 pm, and there were at least 10 families/couples waiting at the front desk. When we got to our room, two housekeepers were still in our room doing a rush sweep and wipe job. Then when we finally FINALLY closed the door, a maintenance guy needed to come in to mess with the TV remote, and we needed to use two remotes to operate one TV. We started asking around, talking to the other guests. Every single one of them had complaints. Come to find out that this is an ongoing charade, to advertise low prices on line, then when they have you there, they screw you. Everyone was in on it, the manager, the front desk, the housekeeping. Sell the rooms first, make profit, understaff the hotel. The hotel restaurant had NO FIRE to cook the meat, the outdoor pool was ice cold, one of the elevators was out of order the whole time we were there. We are lodging a formal complaint with the city's Chamber of Commerce as well as the Better Business Bureau. We come to Myrtle Beach every year and this place has no business being open.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.

I had heard all the negatives about the old M Grand Hotel, and how they had changed their name to SunNSand to avoid the old image. I had also read all the reviews below, but decided to see if things had improved at this hotel. I intended to stay one night, then stay two additional nights at two other hotels, as I am looking for an oceanfront condo to buy, and this resort has its units owned by individual owners. I was so impressed that after visiting just about half the good-looking ocean-front hotels in Myrtle Beach in my search, I spent one night at another hotel, then returned here for the third night. The rooms were the best-looking of any of the upscale (but not-Ritz-Carlton) quality lodgings. The furniture is quite nice, the kitchen can be what you choose (a selection). There was no mold smell anywhere, as had been reported by other reviewers. Everything looked in top condition, and whole floors were closed off as crews painted and refurbished them during this winter. Everything worked well. The restaurant is scheduled to open in March, as no restaurant business could succeed in January on the ocean. The staff was friendly, including maid service. Linens were white and clean, bathrooms granite, flat-screen TV, safe, refrigerator, microwave, iron, blow dryer, etc. They admitted the elevators (all four in the hotel seemed to be working) were slow, but told me that they were having a meeting with their property owners association to discuss updating them all. I called Charlotte, NC, the home of the resort's management company and talked to their comptroller and was told of the improvements gradually being made, and believed they intend to make this as good as any resort in Myrtle Beach. And I am going to offer a contract on a condo next week.

Horrible smell, half the time elevators did not work. The fire alarm went off at 1:00 am and the speaker in our room did not work we only knew from hearing people in the hall. Maid service was horrible and the Front Desk was rude and yelling at us because of their mistake at checkout. We booked an extra night and when we checked out they did not even know we booked and extra night. What a dirt hole DO NOT STAY THERE! The pool was nasty!

As others have stated this hotel suddenly changed it's name to Sun n Sand Resort. This caused us major confusion when arriving to check in. Where the Resort part comes into play, I have no clue. The $5 "resort" fee is a bit silly but minimal. This place is ran by complete nonprofessionals. Check in begins at 3, there was only one person working the desk at 3:45, and many waiting in line had to wait even longer to get into their room. One guy asked the front desk lady about the delayed check in and she very rudely responded, "you ARE checked in, Sir.. your room just isn't ready". They pump in coconut scent and play Jimmy Buffett in the lobby in a lame attempt at making the place seem tropical (I guess?). Their renovations seemed to have been completed by a first time construction student - many outlets in our room were crushed, had no cover, or the cover was barely attached. We booked a King room but were given two doubles.. It wasn't worth the fight to change rooms for one night. The internet did not work at all.

The main thing that irked me, however, was that they PHOTOCOPY your drivers license AND credit card when you check in. This is most certainly not under PCI compliance and I plan to report them to Visa soon. The room was clean enough but smelled very musty. The halls did not have any working A/C. The morning of our check out, the shower water was scorching hot and there was no adjusting the temperature. Save your time, energy, and money and go ELSE WHERE!

This hotel was very dirty and smelt like mold. The staff was very rude and not helpful. The pool was very small and dirty. Thank goodness we were able to get out of the reservation without any fee.

Check-in started at 3pm. When we arrived at 4pm, there was a line wrapped around the lobby of about 50 people waiting to check in. We left and returned at 5:30 and the line was still 3/4 as long as it was before. We got in line, and finally got to the front desk at 7pm. We never received an explanation as to why there was such a long line, and the staff, including the manager, didn't care one bit that we were all wasting valuable vacation time standing in their lobby. Orbitz had the resort fee listed at $2, but the hotel said it was $6, and the hotel didn't even have a functioning bar or restaurant. The hotel recently "completed" renovations. They were clearly done by amateurs and/or done very quickly and sloppily. In the lobby, there is wallpaper peeling off of the walls, and visible junction boxes that haven't been wired or covered. There was also loose raceway wiring running along the ground to a wall receptacle. This could easily be grabbed and pulled by a small child. While we were there, the elevator to the parking garage only worked sporadically. The shoddy renovations were also present in the guest room as the walls had signs of poorly-repaired water damage, and the shower was installed in an unsupported state as the floor flexed when stood upon. In addition, the safety rail on the balcony was loose as the brackets were pulling out of the wall, and the room safe did not work. For $120 per night, this hotel should be ashamed of this product, and hopefully reviews like mine will dissuade potential customers from staying here to the point that they either go out of business or seriously change their practices.
