We stayed at the Comfort Inn for a week in late June 2007. After reading some of the reviews, I was a little worried, but all in all, our experience with the hotel was fair. The rooms were very clean, but small. The first room they put us in did not have a bathtub, just a shower stall. Since we have a three year old, we called the front desk and requested to be moved to a room with a bathtub. They were very pleasant and said we could be moved the next morning. The bathrooms were tiny, with just the shower stall or tub and the toilet. The sink and mirror were outside in the room. The balcony was nice and the view of the beach was beautiful. The airconditioning didn't seem to work well in either room we were in, so we called and asked the front desk for maintance. Someone came up and fitted a piece of plastic over the unit so that the air blew more outward instead of up into the curtains and it did help a bit. But the room never got cold, just comfortable.
The continental breakfast was okay. The food was good, there was a "make your own waffle", bagels, muffins, dry cereal, oatmeal, coffee and juice. The only bad thing is that it is very very small in the lobby. People are fighting for tables and for space. You can barely eat without people bumping into you every five minutes since the sitting tables and food counters were so close together. But the food was good and free, so we did eat there most mornings. Other mornings we walked across the street to a Friendlies resturant and ate breakfast there and it was very good.
The beach was very nice and clean. The hotel was in walking distance to the Family Kingdom amusement park and water park. We walked to both one day and my daughter had a blast at both.
The outside pool at the hotel was nice also. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was clean and nice cold refreshing water. The beach chairs and lounges all seemed in perfect condition. There was an indoor pool and an indoor kiddy pool, but they both seemed a little grungy to me. The room smelled so strong of chlorine that it burned my eyes to be in there, and I wasn't even in the water. The kiddy pool looked very dingy. It looked like it was filled with water three years ago and left to sit since then. There were two sticks laying in the bottom of it, that I assume were chlorine sticks, and my daughter stepped on them and hurt her foot. We didn't stay in the kiddy pool for more than five minutes!
There was also no outside refreshments or stand at the hotel. There were vending machines in the one hall, and we did get snacks and drinks from the machines, but it would've been nice to have a little outdoor tiki bar.
The pool next door at the Westgate Oceanfront Hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn) looked amazing. They had a lazy river, adult pool, and kiddy pool with geisers and waterfalls. They also had music and an outdoor bar/restuarant. I wished we would have stayed there! The Comfort Inn really didn't have anything nice like that for the kids.
We did see a couple roaches in the hotel hallway (one dead) and one alive in the elevator. But I never saw any bugs in the hotel room. The hallways are open and exposed to outside and the elements, so it was really no big deal.
The elevators were not too good. There is only two for the entire hotel and if you are unlucky enough to be on the top two floors (as we were) then only one elevator can take you there. The elevators were EXTREMELY tiny and very very hot and slow. You could barely fit a luggage cart in there, or more than 4 people. It was very annoying after a while.
All in all, it was an okay hotel and we never really had any problems. As I said, the rooms were clean and comfortable. We care more about the beach and activities than the room, so we had a happy vacation. But if you can afford it, I would reccomend spending a bit more money to stay somewhere nicer. I know we will next time.
