“wish we could have spent more time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2009

we visited huntington beach state park while vacationing in myrtle beach. what turned into a morning trip for something to do for the kids, turned into a wonderful educational family outing. the park offers free excursions to anyone wanting to attend. our kids thoroughly enjoyed them. they are hour long sessions but we could have spent several hours doing each one. we went on a beachcombing session in which the guide let everyone scour the beach to find shells or whatever else interesting we could find. once you have found your bounty, we then got into a discussion group and the guide then explained what could be found on the beach as well as from what animal it came from. the kids found it to be extremely fun and exciting. we also did a salt water marsh excursion. using various types of nets, the kids (and adults) were able to search the marsh for various aquatic creatures. several types of fish, crabs, and shrimp were found. my two oldest daughters (7 and 5) loved it. it was hands on science at its best. i highly recommend this location. you do have to pay for admission to the park. prices are modest. bird lovers paradise. you could easily spend two days at this location.

“Interesting and beautiful place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2008

This state park has lots of variety. While it was a little cold so we did not see any alligators, we enjoyed the beauty of the beach and Atalaya, the whimsical/weird house built by the Huntingtons. The staff at the park were all very friendly and welcoming.

We camped here for a week (rustic tent camping, not RV) in July. The tent sites are really nice, big and private, but there are only 6 of them so book early. The beach is gorgeous and the area accessed from the tent campsites is nearly deserted, which is a real treat for such a beautiful spot. Excellent bird-watching, lots of alligators to see in the swamp area and we were lucky enough to have a huge sea turtle swimming next to us one afternoon! Atalaya on the grounds and the Brookgreen Gardens across the highway are worth the visit and really lovely.

“Great natural setting.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2007

We finally got around to visiting Huntington Beach State Park and it is a beautiful place. The park has a wonderful beach and great nature trails through the forest. There is also a lengthy boardwalk out onto the coastal marsh with plenty of wildlife.

We even saw a couple alligators from the causeway leading from the entrance to the main parking areas.

The park also features the castle of the Huntington's (who also provided the land and much of the sculpture for Brookgreen Gardens which is right across the highway from the park).
