Each year my husband and I look forward to our annual visit to Brookgreen. We love the tranquility of the place with its beautiful sculptures and delightful flower gardens. This time there were lots of butterflies, so it was fun trying to photograph these quick movers. We like to grab a snack at The Old Kitchen and sit on the porch looking at the historic live oaks. The boat ride and Trekker trips are fun and educational (and worth the extra fee). The zoo is fairly small in terms of number of animals, but it's fun to see the various herons, eagles, and hawks. The river otters are always entertaining. We walk the grounds rather than riding the tram, so we get some exercise too. To learn the full story of the Huntington's, I also recommend visiting Huntington State Park in order to see Atalaya, the couple's private home.
