Owner description: The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Today the museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) with 29 aircraft on display from WWII to the present; the USS Laffey (DD-724), a Sumner-class destroyer; and the USS Clamagore (SS-343), a GUPPY III submarine. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is headquartered here and their official Medal of Honor Museum is onboard the USS Yorktown. There is also a Cold War Sub Memorial and Vietnam Support Base Camp on the surrounding grounds.

You can visit the USS Yorktown and see some neat planes and other aircraft. And, then get a great feel for what it was like to be a sailor during World War II. they also have a nice Vietnam Outward operating Base to visit.

I have taken friends on this tour of the USS Yorktown and Patriots point including the USS Clamagore and USS Laffey. Plan on spending at least 4 hours there you can easily spend the whole day there if your a history buff. Before you take the tour check inside the gift stores many times they have discount coupons for the tour.

On July 4th, Patriots Point again hosted its annual fireworks show. Normally, admission fee is charged, but this fireworks show is free (parking was $10) and options for children's activities and live music were provided. Plenty of food and drink were for sale but you are also allowed to bring your own cooler. For $20, advance purchase, you can choose to watch the show from the flight deck. But the view from landside was just great. It was a unique way to spend the evening.
