Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Today the museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) with 29 aircraft on display from WWII to the present; the USS Laffey (DD-724), a Sumner-class destroyer; and the USS Clamagore (SS-343), a GUPPY III submarine. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is headquartered here and their official Medal of Honor Museum is onboard the USS Yorktown. There is also a Cold War Sub Memorial and Vietnam Support Base Camp on the surrounding grounds.

Volunteers gave a great tour.
A lot of information.
You can get up close and personal with a lot of the displays.
Make sure you plan for the whole day.

“Great day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012

Great way to experience first hand, life on a WWII aircraft carrier. Allow 5-6 hours to really cover everything. Don't miss the Medal of Honor Museum, submarine, and destroyer. Our 12 year old boys really enjoyed it.

“What a great outdoor museum of all thing maritime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

You can get on an aircraft career, USS Yorktown, and see so many cool things that you would have never guessed were on a ship. There is a great sports park with plenty place to enjoy activities. A great resort and restaurant down the road and you are so close to down town Charleston. Just a wonderful view of Charleston from the USS Yorktown. If your in the area you have to visit this site.

“Great adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Took the grandparents, kids and could have spent 2 days seeing everything. There is so much to read and see that is educational, interesting, and picture worthy we will definitely go back. Go on a good weather day for sure to enjoy it thoroughly. I suggest eating prior to going and if needed there is a place for a snack and drink. Wear comfy shoes and clothes to climb the stairs and walk around. Small children may not enjoy it so much as pretense and older.
