“Terrific food, creative and consistent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2014

There is a reason this place is so busy; it has great food and great service. Ingredients are sourced locally where reasonable and showcased daily. For this reason, the menu changes slightly on a seasonal basis and specials are well thought out and executed. Over five days we did not have one problem with our food. In fact, the chefs went out of their way to create special vegetarian meals for my daughter that are not on the menu, but probably should be!

Staples on this menu include steamed mussels, served in a lovely light broth that makes for a great starter. The beet salad, (I know what you’re thinking but wow, what flavor!) The beets were finely chopped and perfectly paired with arugula and a light vinaigrette. What I loved was the finish of the beets, no earthy aftertaste. Just really pleasant. The asparagus and tomato and red pepper bisques were smooth, well seasoned and not heavy at all. Seasoning in this kitchen is perfect, not too much of anything, which tells me the food is tasted regularly by the chefs. My personal favorite is the Charleston stand-by, the She Crab soup. Everyone has their own version and Old Village Post House has a delicious one which has body, flavor and a generous portion of crab. Oh, so good!

Fresh fish is a key ingredient here and it is masterfully prepared. We had flounder, which is not the typical flat fillet but a thicker, more robust version that was excellent. The grouper and soft shelled crab were specials that obviously are seasonal and depend on availability. All of the accompaniments to each entree are balanced, fresh and perfectly portioned. The grilled Scottish salmon entrée plate was cleaned as all our plates were each night.

Don’t overlook the other entrees, because the South Carolina Quail was perfectly cooked, not gamey at all. Again, the chef paired the quail perfectly with a lemon-thyme sausage that was just deeelicious!!!! The Bistro steak was flavorful, tender and perfectly cooked to order with a slight char on the outside. If the Post House burger sounds too simple for this place, it isn’t. It was also flavorful, perfectly cooked and just plain good.

Vegetarians need not be afraid, the kitchen is perfectly capable of turning out unique and satisfying choices if you ask nicely. With only one vegetarian entrée offered on the menu, we wanted some variety over our five-day stay and got it. A most accommodating chef turned out a pasta and pesto dish that the next table asked our server for it was so delicious. Just so nice they accommodated us on a very busy Saturday night.

Desserts are a blend of staples and seasonal originals like a strawberry pie served with a quality vanilla ice cream and dulce de leche. The chocolate silk pie and a lemon, fruit tart were quickly gobbled up.

The quality of service here is phenomenal. It is true customer service, even when this very busy restaurant is cooking on all burners. The servers are polite, well-trained and very accommodating. This is a place where the managers clear your plates when the servers are busy. It’s just something you don’t see very often.

This is a restaurant where you can enjoy a great meal with good friends or with your partner and walk away feeling satisfied. We highly recommend it, and yes, we will be back!

“Very comfortable”

We arrived early and were pleasantly received and escorted to a bar area. At our dinner the food as well as the service was simply excellent. We really enjoyed the meal and venue and will certainly come back again.

“Great restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2014

We went here to celebrate my birthday and we loved it! A beautiful restored Southern home which gives a nice atmosphere. The food was awesome and the service great. If you are looking for an upper scale meal in Mount Pleasant you will not be disappointed.

“Request a downstairs table”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2014

Even though we had a reservation, we were led past charming rooms downstairs up a steep staircase to a drab overly-illuminated upstairs room with no atmosphere. Nursing a knee injury, I was told I could take the elevator, but when we rang for it and opened the door, behold an empty elevator shaft! Our Charlestonian friends love this place, but my husband and I were disappointed. His asparagus soup was insipid. My spinach salad consisted of enormous four-inch leaves with two-inch stems. My paltry two medium and one small scallop main course was so salty that the salt overpowered their delicate flavor. Maybe if you sit downstairs and order something different you would have a better dining experience than we did.
