Old Village Post House Inn
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 2, 2014 via mobile

My husband and I came to stay in Mt. Pleasant to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary. The area around the inn is delightful! It's part if the old village and is very walkable, safe , and beautiful. The inn itself fits right in since it's a building that dates back to the 1800s. We stayed in the Pitt st. Suite which is on the 3rd floor. When we first arrived we were a little annoyed because the room was super hot and we found a stained washcloth. We told Noah the restaurant manager, who was super helpful. He resolved the problem and brought us complimentary champagne up to our room, together with fresh washcloths :) The room and bed itself was very comfortable and very private. This room also has a hot tub, even though it isn't new works fine and fits 2 people comfortably. The distance from Charleston was great because we could get away from all the tourist craziness when we wanted but be back in town in 10minutes. Breakfast was served downstairs in the restaurant and was usually pastries, yogurt, great coffee, an assortment of cereal and some very yummy ham and cheese. Overall a very pleasant stay in a great location.

My daughter and I stayed at the Old Village Post House in April on a visit to Charleston. It is like staying at the home of a grandparent you didn't know you had. The rooms are old fashioned and charming. Our room, I forget what it was called but it had twin beds, was more roomy than it looked on line. Plenty of room. The bath is definitely dated and could use some updates. Everything is clean and well cared for. We were more than merely comfortable, I wished that we had more time at the Inn and in this neighborhood. Do take a chance to walk to the street end to see the view, beautiful, stately homes along the water. The area is beyond charming. You feel like a local. The breakfast was just fine, nothing special. Considering the prices for hotels and Inns in Charleston proper, this is an excellent value and a solid choice. Quieter I am sure than in Charleston proper, and of course the parking is free. I would absolutely stay again if we are lucky enough to be in Charleston again soon.

Room Tip: We were just above the restaurant and we did hear some noise, mostly in the morning, but it was usua...

The location is very convenient to the islands and Charleston. When we arrived the room temperature was very warm but we decided to give the A/C time to cool the room. We left to do some sightseeing and when we returned the room temp had actually increased. When I went to the front desk I received an alarming look when I mentioned that the A/C was set to 69F as apparently the unit is known to freeze up when set below 70F. There were no signs in the room warning that it should not be set that low and, in fact, it was set to that temp when we arrived. Fortunately the maintenance manager arrived shortly and the room was cool when we returned from dinner. We booked the Maverick suite for 3 adults but the suite is really not suitable for 3 adults as the pull-out sofa's mattress is in very poor shape and needed to be replaced. Additionally, while the website states "separate bedroom" there is no door separating the sitting room with pull-out sofa from the bedroom. Having stayed at Inns with similar room rates, we expected more comfortable beds and higher-quality linens. The restaurant was closed for repairs during our stay so we weren't able to try it. We were disappointed that they only served a continental breakfast and not a hot breakfast as most Inns with restaurants do. The website did not indicate a continental breakfast either. Finally, we did not see any staff at breakfast either morning to welcome guests, ensure they were taken care of, and to clean off the tables.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Old Village Post House. My wife and I wanted to experience Charleston, but didn't want to stay in the city proper, as all the hotels in town were either outside our desired price range or rumored to be rowdy.

Staying here in Mount Pleasant worked perfectly for us. It was a quiet and beautiful neighborhood. The inn itself was delightful. The inn had historic charm, but everything was extremely clean and comfortable. The staff was delightful and friendly.

The accommodations weren't deluxe or elegant but always extremely comfortable. Their tag line rang true: like staying at your best friend's house. This ran very true, but only if your friend keeps an impeccably clean and comfortable house!

Room Tip: We stayed on the third floor. When we told the staff how nice and quiet it was, they said the third...

Our experience was nothing short of exceptional. It’s an older building, which presents some challenges, all met and overcome by a wonderful staff from the manager Katie to the housekeeper Elizabeth and everyone in between. This inn is very clean and is efficiently run. Everyone made us feel welcome and special.

It’s a very popular and busy place, so make your reservations well in advance. The rooms are priced well for the market and are a good value for your money. A quality continental breakfast comes with the room and on Sunday you get a lovely brunch (entrée + non alcoholic beverage).

The location is super convenient to the airport, downtown and beaches. The neighborhood is gorgeous and quiet and a great place to go for short or long walks. Parking is on the street and free. Despite the popularity of this inn, we had no problems parking. There are plenty of alternatives for eating close by if you so choose, just not so much within walking distance.

We did the triple play – stayed at the inn, got married there and ate a number of meals there. Our friends were treated like royalty by a well-trained staff, offering a genuine hospitality that is rare today. Management exceeded our expectations and accommodated all our requests, to include preparing original and unique vegetarian meals for one of our party. Catering is handled by a very capable young lady named Bonnie, who will work with you no matter if your budget is unlimited or more modest. Our wedding reception was small and was handled flawlessly. These people are very flexible.

There is privacy when you want it, but be mindful there are frequently dinner events and parties, so if you want total seclusion, this likely isn’t the place for you. You must eat at least one meal at the restaurant and have a cocktail at the tavern for the total experience! The food is absolutely delicious (see separate review).

The beds were comfy and the showers/bath had plenty of hot water, which can be a challenge in older buildings. The rooms could use a little updating, but there is plenty of charm in this old house, which more than made up for it for us.

Check in and out were effortless, the workers polite and helpful always.

We are now loyal customers who will be back again and again! What a great experience.

Stay – April 12-17

Room Tip: 3rd Floor rooms are quietest during functions.

We were headed to Charleston for the Spring Home & Garden tours and usually stay in town but wanted to try something different this year. We think the Maverick group does a great job so decided to stay at their inn just 15 minutes or so from downtown in Mt. Pleasant. This is a lovely old inn and we had a wonderful room & bath with heart pine floors but do be prepared to do a couple of long flights of stairs. Not a problem for us but maybe for some. They do have an elevator but request you use that for luggage only. We also judge an inn by how comfortable the beds are and we compliment them on their great mattress. We say that as we both have bad backs and walked at least five miles each day & awoke refreshed & ready to go each morning. The staff was friendly & accommodating and we look forward to a return trip.

By the way the Inn has a restaurant. We had dinner there our first evening. I just love Beef Carpacio but am very careful where I order it - again knowing the Maverick restaurants, I decided to try it -Wonderful!! I followed that up with their Veggy dish and that was superb as well!! My husband enjoyed a soup and hamburger.

Lastly, we stopped by the bar late one evening on our return from Charleston & enjoyed a cocktail before bed.

Only weakness was the breakfast. We were excited to see scones our first morning but they were stale & enedible. The fruit was fresh & good as well as the yogurt - but by our third morning their was no yogurt and little else - disappointing.

Room Tip: Believe we were in room # 5 and it was so quiet!! Although others were there we never heard a sound.

My husband and I stayed in Charleston two weeks ago to celebrate his birthday and we were extremely pleased with the Old Village Post House. The neighborhood that the Inn is located in is so beautiful and a short walk to the water. The staff was very pleasant and our room was terrific! We would love to stay at the Inn again on our next visit to Charleston.
