This restaurant is worth the trip across the bridge. Creative dining at a reasonable price. The food was light touch low country cooking. The service was so good that it added to the dining experience . Lovely atmosphere. Went there in January and didn't get to experience the open porch. Can only imagine how lovely that would be in the spring.

“Excellent Cuisine!”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

My group dined at this restaurant for dinner on a Friday evening.

To begin with, parking is a bit of a trick. The restaurant is located in a neighborhood, and is in a shopping area with some other shops and restaurants. Be aware you can park on the street, or in one of the lots in front of the houses. Just be patient, and the hidden parking will slowly reveal itself to you.

The restaurant is in a coastal-style building, and is very elegant. Inside, the seating area is intimate, with a small bar, a single long table for bar patrons, and approximately 15 tables. Since the restaurant is small and tables are close to each other and to the bar, it is loud when crowded. You will find yourself yelling over the din to make yourself heard.

The menu offers a lot of great selections. The bar menu has smaller plates and appetizers, and the main menu has smaller plates and full-sized entrees. There is also a daily special. The wine list is extensive, with the bulk of the wines in the 35-70 dollar range per bottle. Draft beers are local, and all very good. Our party ordered bacon cheese grits as an appetizer, and the fish and chips entree and the grilled barrelfish daily special entree. I'm not sure what type of cheese was used, but it added a little zest without overwhelming the grits. The bacon was phenomenal, full of flavor and slightly sweet.

The fried fish and shrimp were done perfectly. The batter is a light tempura, with zero evidence of any grease, leaving you to enjoy the flavor of the shrimp and fish. The barrelfish was grilled and served over noodles in a lobster cream sauce, with some grilled shrimp. Again, the fish was cooked perfectly, and the lobster cream sauce accentuated the flavor of a deep-sea grilled fish without overwhelming it.

Overall, the food was amazing. Everything was perfectly flavored and perfectly cooked. We're already making out a wishlist for the next visit.

Service was also perfect. Our server was polite, prompt, attentive, very helpful with the questions we asked, and was never intrusive.

“Wow! What a Place!”
Reviewed December 25, 2012

I should have guessed that Robert Carter would create an incredible restaurant, but I had no idea it would be this unbelievably good. There is a warm, casual atmosphere here that immediately puts you at ease and sets you up for a memorable meal. Our server, Kathy Jo, was
a joy. She was very knowlegeable about all the food and drinks and made great suggestions. Her friendly, outgoing personality added much to our experience. We had the Saturday night blue plate special which was a beautiful piece of prime rib seved with wonderful sides and the beyond delicious shrimp risotto. We started with the crabcakes and an oyster appetizer that will go down in my journal of best things ever. The special cocktails were awesome as was the caramel cake for dessert...make sure you save room for a slice or take some home. If I lived close to Carter's Kitchen, I would be there all the time. Get in your car right now and go! You will thank me forever, Bravo, Chef Carter!

“A gem!”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

This bistro- type restaurant has it all--ambience, excellent food and service plus. Our evening began with a happy hour drink ( superior house wine selection) at the comfortable and casual bar. The bartender was attentive personable and very knowledgable about the establishment's offerings as well as general knowledge about the area. Our dinner server was a delight-- articulate and more than well- versed in the preparations of menu options. Everything from the appetizers to the dessert selections were even better than described, not unreasonably priced, and served with a clear intention to. We put this place high on the list of " not to be missed" when you are in the Charleston area.

“Outstanding !”
Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

My husband and I had the good luck to stay at The Inn at Ion. We got in late and wandered downstairs for dinner! What a treat - our waitress was a sweetheart. She treated us like we were on a first date! Food was excellent from the Salty Saint Bernard to the lemon tart dessert.

Breakfast is included with a night at the inn so we had three more excellent meals at Carter's Kitchen. I can't wait to go back!
