“Beautiful location but disappointing value”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Loved the grounds and beach. The ocean view room was OK (although not up to expectations based on the cost). We had to wait 2 1/2 hours to get in once we arrived, despite front desk assurances they would expedite our room preparation. The Sunday Brunch had limited selection for the price and a number of the hot items were poor quality or preparation. Since you are a captive audience on the island the food is generally overpriced everywhere (e.g. a muffin for $6). Kudos to the staff for friendly and very good service. We were celebrating an anniversary and appreciated to complimentary champagne and sweets provided. We stayed the following couple of nights at the Wentworth Mansion in Charleston and it was much better experience at a lower cost.

This hotel exudes tranquility with amazingly spacious rooms and public areas. The balcony had a lovely view but lacked privacy. The Elemis toiletries were a treat and the housekeeping impeccable. The breakfast smoothie was the best I have ever tasted. The staff were very friendly and attentive at every turn, reception, housekeeping, bar. Everyone we came across.
The negative points were the bed, which was very high and lumpy, and audible door banging, the source of which I couldn't identify.
The beach is sweeping and a wonderful setting.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here, despite the negatives, a perfect spot to relax and recharge.

This hotel looks like it's been there for a hundred years, but was only built 8yrs ago. It is right alongside the beach and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. We had cocktails in several of the bars, be careful they are very strong! We had a room on the 5th floor, overlooking the central lawn and the beach. The room was spacious, with an unusual bathroom arrangement, there were shutters opening into the bedroom. Service was lovely and considerate, each time we went to eat they called us by our names (nice touch). Had my first taste of grits, goodness they were tasty. Our only downer was we had to leave by 12 as Bill Gates had it booked out! Mind you, we went down to the Ryder Cup bar and had a lovely lunch whilst watching guys try and hole the 18th.

What a place , looks like its been there for years ( 2004) as a mansion for a plantation , deep colour wood floors , high ceilings and two huge staircases. Bar and restaurants lovely and comfortable and great service . Prices not bad for cocktails or wine . Breakfast great - shrimp and grits a bit like a mild curry ( spoken as a brit ) but is a must .
Mint Julep by the pools fab and a very short walk on to the beach is a must .
Golf shop and gift shop both good and not too bad in cost . Godd quality . Staff all very friendly and helpful .
Golf courses all looked fab and friends who played The Ocean were speachless. Didnt go to the spa but the fitness room and indoor pool looked godd and very clean .

Room Tip: 4th floor ocean view with balcony

Just returned from The Sanctuary where we had stayed for three days after New York. What a contrast. Immediately relaxed in the beautiful setting by the ocean. Excellent food and service with a number of fantastic golf course including The Ocean Course. Rooms are an excellent size with views of the sea. Good gym and indoor pool along with the two outdoor pools which were also heated!
With such a stunning place I thought it was excellent value for money with food being reasonable for the quality of hotel. The bar was also I thought reasonable with beers being about $5 and cocktails $10 - $15. I am already planning another visit in the near future and it would be great for kids as well.

If you're looking for a fun healthy vacation just book the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island and you're done. You can be as active as you want, and still savor the relaxed beauty of the island here. This is an especially great vacation destination for couples or families that like to do different things but still be able to join up quickly and easily throughout the day. The staff here could not have been more accommodating too. for golfers - the Ocean Course was a real treat - for both the not so great golfer or the champion - they don't make you feel bad if you're not so good as long as you have the right attitude and don't hold people up. The Tennis program is a bit dependent on the season and how busy the resort is. If you go off season and/or when it's slow, you probably won't be able to play as much if you don't bring a partner to play with. But take advantage of the fantastic pro's - especially Roy Barth and Brandon (or was it Brendon?). Best lessons ever! Kayaking can be hit or miss - if you miss the dolphins, the activity is best for the beginner kayakers, kind of slow for the more advanced. No matter what, make sure you take a bike on the beach. If you've never done this before, it's a real kick! So don't bother looking elsewhere - this place is the real deal. And staying at the Sanctuary ensures that you will love every minute of your time spent in this part of heaven.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the ground floor rooms - they're level with the people walking by. Anything above...

Until now my favourite hotel has always been Claridges in London. However I feel that I will have to revise this and say in future that it is the Sanctuary. The room, food, wine and in particular the service were exemplary. The location of the hotel in the dunes so close to an amazing beach is perfect and feels special and private. The staff are attentive yet discrete and to a man and woman very professional and welcoming. The breakfast is the best I have had in the USA and the ambience of the bar and lounge in the afternoon a delight. There are many dining options and our party tried nearly all and not a fault found. We look forward to staying hear again ....
