“Earl Klugh Kiawah Jazz Festival at The Sanctuary”
Reviewed November 15, 2010

This hotel is remote and "off the beaten path", but one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and the staff is well trained, polite and accommodating. We were there for the first annual Jazz Festival. My wife and I were fortunate enough to meet Earl Klugh personally in the lobby. He was gracious enough to even pose for a photograph with us. We look forward to next year's festival, and our return trip to this excellent hotel.

Most beautiful, well decorated and appointed, professionally managed, friendly staffed resort. Our room was magnificent - large, two balconies, oceanfront. A bottle of wine arrived just after we checked in with Happy Anniverary wishes. Great dining, large and accommodating menus, many exceptional restaurants on site, pristine cleanliness, well manicured grounds and a staff that paid exceptional attention to making every detail of our stay special. Having traveled much, and experienced many resorts throughout the US and Europe, Kiawah Golf Resort is in a well deserved class of elegance.

We had a wonderful time. We were celebrating my husband's birthday. He loved it and several times said, "we're coming back". What a beautiful place. One thing I noted was how happy the employees are. They truly love working there.

Stayed at the Premier Quality Resort Villa to attend a wedding reception the last weekend in October (the most expensive villa offered by the resort). What a disappointment! It began with our arrival....the lighting around the villas is very poor and got worse when we had to carry our luggage up one floor to get to the elevator to our third floor unit....just a very poor and unsafe design. When we entered the room there was a horrible musty smell throughout. I immediately went to the conveinence store and purchased room deodorizer, sprayed the entire unit and opened all doors and windows which seemed to help a bit. The beddi ng in the king size bed is of motel 6 quality. There are no fitted sheets and the ones they use are not even large enough to tuck underneath the matress. The pillows are simply awful, flat, no filling and very uncomfortable. We telepnoned housekeeping to ask for fitted sheets and diffeferent pillows. We were told that they do not use fitted sheets but would bring sheet straps to hold the sheets in place. The furnishings with the exception of flat screen televisions are of 1970 vintage. There was no wi-fi in our unit. The deck was so small there was only space available for two bar stools. Having visited Kiawah several times before we had always stayed with friends who have very nice private homes but since we were attending a wedding we tried the resort villas. I will never stay here again...the villas are so old it's surprising the resort has not started an extensive renovation throughout. The Hampton Inn is by far much nicer!

This was our third trip to Kiawah Island Golf Resort. We stayed in the Villas which is a great family value. We brought our children and grandchildren last year and it worked out great with the kitchen. So we decided to do the Villas once again. Usually while my husband is on one of the five beautiful golf courses I am on the tennis court. This trip I had a broken toe, so no tennis for me. Looking for other adventures I rode along in the golf cart with my husband. The golf courses were beautiful! Not to mention all the wild life we saw, alligators, deer, and so many birds I can't even mention. This was great! This year we rented bikes and rode for miles along the beach and the island. I was sad no tennis, but with all there is to do, I was able to enjoy many of the other activities on the island. The best one was dining!

The Sanctuary anticiaptes any and evrey need and there is always someone to filled your slightest wish for comfort. The staff are uniformly pleasant and overly solicitous. It is a nice touch that guests are always adressed by name. The consistent pleasantness of the staff more than starts one's frame of mind towards complete civility and relaxation. There are no words to adequately describe the incredible atmosphere of The Sanctuary from the antiques and art that meets every turn of the eye to the quiet ambiance of quality and service of every need. This place is one in a million!

We booked a 4 BR Maritime Condo for a long weekend for 4 couples. Our first dissapointment was to discover that while the MBR was gorgeous, one BR had twins and one had a trundle bed- not a good situation of a couple. The Resort told us they have no control over the furnishings in the condos which are individually owned and there was not a condo with 4 king or queen beds available.
We also had a difficult time finding out information about things like the location of the pool availabe to us, and how to get to the beach. It would have been great to have someone from the check in office orient us to our condo and the things around us.
The condo did have very nice living area furnishings and art. The kitchen had most basic equipment and dishes although we would have appreciated glass rather than plastic wine glasses for this luxury price.
We were located on the top floor of a building so we had a tree top view and their was a patio on the roof from which we could get a peak at the ocean but there was no furnishings there for sitting or lounging.
Dining on the island is all owned by the Resort company. Our quality and service experiences were varied.
The guys in the group played 3 rounds of golf. They loved the Ocean Course which they played last but found the others to be mediocre- tucked in between buildings and not well maintained.
The Sanctuary Hotel which we discovered was within walking distance was beautiful. We were not allowed to use the pool there, which was dissapointing.
I think if you are looking for a luxury hotel experience the Sancturay might be great but renting a condo may be dissapointing.
