“Beautiful resort with wonderful food.”
Reviewed May 23, 2010

We arrived in Kiawah in May, and had a two-bedroom oceanfront condo. It had been newly renovated, which was a huge plus, because I enjoy brand-new cleanliness. My daughter and her boyfriend joined us for part of the trip and there was plenty for them to do. We walked on the beach every day, had massages (which were overpriced, as is the case with every resort spa we've ever used), read on our deck, and ate at the wonderful restaurants there. Nothing beats being lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean. I do wish they didn't charge for beach chairs, but my daughter brought her own and there were two in the condo, so that was not an issue for us. I always stop at a Target store to buy a cheap pillow, because even though the linens are very clean I have a problem using someone else's pillows. We had delicious dinners at Tomasso's, Jasmine Porch, and even Shrimpers. Shrimpers surprised us because it is very casual, but the food was great. One more thing -- if you're in a condo, stop on the way for groceries so you don't have to go back or use the convenience store at the resort. The store does have nice salads and yummy she-crab soup for a quick lunch, though.

We stayed at the Villas at Kiawah Island for two nights on our way back north . The golf is great: The Ocean course is one of the best I've played and Osprey Point is nice, but not spectacular. The villa one bedroom suite had a small bedroom, nice sized seperate room with kitchen & porch. The bathroom was small but ok. Decor was standard rental pool furnishings. We did not realize that housekeeping was an extra, never saw that before.
The Ocean Club restaurant at the Sanctuary was excellent. Service was good and the room and ambiance was formal in a pleasant way. However you should be aware that it is very expensive. Over $160 for two with two drinks and a glass of wine. Dinner at Tomassos was dissapointing. One entree ended up being deep fried fish and when it was sent back the replacement was not good. The pasta appetizer was first rate. The manager showed a lot of class by comping us for the entire meal.. The staff in all areas of the hotel, restaurants and golf courses were extremely pleasant and professional

After reading a few reviews here, we were a bit nervous about our booking for an oceanview one bedroom but our 6 nights starting between Christmas and New Year turned out to be a perfect peaceful wonderful holiday with a clean quiet apartment at Shipwreck Watch.
The apartment had everything you need for a hideaway holiday with fully equiped kitchen, clean new bathroom with glass doored shower, big bed, safe for valuables in the bedroom, living/dining space, balcony with view of the ocean and miles and miles of beach to walk on for hours and hours right in front of your door. We lucked out and saw dolphins in the surf !
The staff from check in, to bike rental, to Nature Center, etc. were all very friendly, helpful and very young.
Restaurant choices for going out are limited and although we did have a kitchen, we went out twice. We did like the seafood and fun at Shrimper's but Tamaso was loud, food services was too fast, appetizers were fantastic but the main courses - my husbands pasta and my pizza were nothing short of horrible.
Our recommendation - although dear - is driving to Newton Farms, they have a wonderful food selection, everything you could wish for.
Rent a bike, turn off your phone and discover the island...

Stayed in the East Villas, Unit 4448 on Kiawah Island through the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Will start out by sharing that this is not a hot nightlife spot, but there are good restaurants. Fully enjoyed flexibility of gorgious condo kitchen, granite countertops with fabulous view of ocean. Lots of swimming in the beach and a nearby outdoor pool. Love introducing wildlife to small children (4 and 6), and it was so rewarding for kids to see so many animals, lizards, birds, etc. in their own natural habitat. Every day enjoyed coffee/tea sitting out on balcony listening to gulls, waves, breathing sea air, and spotting deer munching their breakfast. The beach is large. Sand is hard and brown and it can be windy, so it's great to play games, fly kites, etc. Plenty of waves for boogie boarding. Got a chance to "steal away" for a massage and it was fabulous. The massage setting was so serene that massages elsewhere are no longer as relaxing. Made a trip into Charleston since the drive was only 30 minutes to 40 minutes and enjoyed a day of sightseeing and dining. Golf courses absolutely amazing. Easy for a family vacation where a parent or both parents want to get in some golf. Fully enjoyed our dining time at the Sanctuary. The Villa we stayed in, 4448, was immaculate, great condition, and perfect for our family. We will return!

We stayed at the Shipwatch Villas and, unlike a previous reviewer, we had very comfortable beds. The kitchen layout was awkward, I agree, but we didn't spend much time there over our long weekend. The view of the ocean from the upper floors was just beautiful and it was nice to hear the surf at night. The breeze blew nicely through the big sliding doors. One cautionary note on the unit we were in (I'm not certain for how many units this would apply) if you're a family with children: the second bedroom's balcony was completely separated from the master bedroom/living room balcony so extra supervision would be needed.

To spend a day at the beach, be prepared to pay $25 + tip for an umbrella, chairs and a beach towel (no beach towels in the room). If you need to print multiple boarding passes, you'll get charged .20 per page after the first two pages. There were two "sun decks" at Shipwatch, but no chairs. Nearest place to bbq your dinner is a mile and a half away.

Bike/walking trails were nice. We didn't golf or play tennis. The trip to/from Charleston was 30 - 40 minutes, depending on traffic but was worth it. We went into town for dinner on Saturday night as well as to walk around for a few hours on Sunday. All in all, I'd return, but will know better this time about the extras.

I just stayed in a home with the Kiawah Island Golf resort with my friends. We had a fantastic time. The house was beautiful and the young people that work at the desk and housekeeping were fabulous. We didn't play golf but the courses looked nice. We did eat at the Atlantic Room for dinner one night and it was just perfect. Don't miss the chance to catch a sunset at that great place! We also went for lunch to one of the clubhouses... Osprey Point and had a great selection of burgers! Nice treat instead of all the fancy food. The home was clean and in really good shape. We all had a great time! Can't wait to go back.

I stayed at the Turtle Cove Villas for 2 nights as part of a conference located on the island. The island is gorgeous. It is very well preserved, and I saw deer wandering around at several points.

The access to the island from Charleston airport is somewhat challenging, since there is one road acess, and any accidents will cause a headache.

My Villas were dated. There was no internet access (seems like 50% have some, and 50% do not), the TV's were quite small, and the art decoration came straight out of the 80's. The bathrooms were small and in need of updating. The bed was not very comfortable, and the lighting in the villa was just OK. My villas was a 8 minute walk to the beach. There is no fitness center by the villas - one must drive across the island to get to a gym. Not a problem for me since I enjoy jogging outside, but this may inconvenience others. On check in, my key did not work, so I had to drive back to the main desk to get another key.

On the plus side, if traveling with a family, the kitchen is quite large, and there is a nice screened in sun room attached to the property.

It is an odd location for a business meeting, but if you like golf, and have kids that like riding bicycles and the beach, and is not a bad family vacation.

The Sanctuary Hotel is the main attraction of this island - very nice, very new, and very expensive!
