We have been vacationing at Kiawah for 25 years. It is one of best beaches. Great for outdoor activities-- walking, golfing, pools, ocean, kayaking, fishing, boating, sailing and just 30 minutes from Charleston. Most of all, we bike for miles and miles.

We have vacationed in Kiawah four times now, and it is a family favorite. If you're a person who wants a vacation where every day is a full schedule, this is not for you; this is a place to unwind, relax, and take it slow. That being said, there is actually a lot to do, if you like being outdoors - marsh and ocean kayaking, paddleboarding, terrific bike riding, golfing, and of course the beach. The beach is the best - almost deserted compared to other beaches on the East coast. When we were there in May, along two to three miles of beach, there were probably less than 100 people - such a treat. Everything is easy - bike rental companies will drop off/pick up bikes at your rental house; you can rent beach umbrellas and chairs that will be set up every day at your beach entry point; and the FreshFields Village at the entry to the island has everything you need during your stay. Kiawah does not disappoint.

Kiawah is a beautiful, very natural, planned community. It is a great place to play golf, ride bikes or relax on a natural beach that is never crowded. It is a perfect place to relax and get away from it all. However, if you are looking for more activity than that, it not the place for you. Most attractions, sights in Charleston, etc, are at least 20 minutes drive time away. I like to call this place the "anti-Myrtle Beach." My husband was bored because he does not like to spend the day on the beach. However, I enjoy sitting on the beach all day and there is always a lot of nature to enjoy from your house or condo. You do not see any obese, heavily tattooed people on the beach. I'm not saying everyone has model-perfect bodies but you don't see any slobs either.
Last two times I have went (I've been there 4 times), we've had some maintenance issues with our place thru Wyndham Vacation Rentals. They were very slow to get these issues taken care of. For example, the pilot light on our hot water tank kept going out. Thankfully my husband is a contractor and could take care of this but that shouldn't be his job while on vacation. Also, some of the units we have stayed in needed updating, especially in the kitchen. Some of the appliances were not in the best working order.
You will feel relaxed if you go on a Kiawah vacation. We just returned from a week's stay and it went way too fast.

Kiawah Island is beautiful and how you will rate it as a vacation destination will depend in large part on your reason for going. It isn’t a Disney or typical “Lots to do . . . ” beach type resort. However, if you want to be off the beaten path in a beautiful southern setting . . . Kiawah is the place for you. This island is spectacularly maintained, is high-end, and not inexpensive. Kiawah is a unique vacation destination located approximately 30 minutes west of Charleston and is at the southern end of John’s Island. Some might consider it remote.

Ultimately, if you are looking for a beautiful southern vacation setting and love seafood . . . you may want to consider visiting Kiawah Island. However, do your research and read both positive and negative reviews for places you might consider staying and things to do. Kiawah can be a place for both families and couples. A great deal of how you feel about Kiawah will have to do with where you stay and how you are treated on the island.

We have been going for 20 years. It is built for the rich but you can rent condo's for $1,000 + a week.
